Five new penalty point offences are being introduced from next month. The new measures have been given the green light by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey.
From the May Bank Holiday weekend, motorists will be faced with the more stringent penalty point system, according to today’s Irish Independent.
Three of the new offences carry a sanction of five points, including failing to have an NCT up to date, an offence for which there is currently a fine of €1,500.
Vehicles of four years and older must undergo an NCT test every two years.
Driving a dangerously defective vehicle or driving without a certificate of road worthiness will also incur five penalty points.
There will be a three-point penalty for driving a vehicle without fixing a fault uncovered at the NCT or for drivers of trucks that strike an overhead bridge.
The five new categories will bring to 42 the total number of penalty point offences under the system, which was introduced under the Road Traffic Act in 2002.
Over 750,000 notices have been issued to motorists under the legislation.

Our Merc 190D's owners manual said you could use up to 15% as it helps starting in v.cold weather.. but it will trash your fuel pump + cause pinging if you put in too much.
You could use 50% kerosene tho..

If its only smokey on start up/acceleration it should be ok. Smoke on start up, check the glow plugs, I use a wire with one end on the positive side of the battery , then touch the glow plug with the other end, if it doesn't spark, its bad (be sure not to touch ANYTHING else with that wire!) Just disconnected the EGR valve on the Heep last night.. no more smoke, better idle, more power, nice. Will block it off/remove it altogether in the summer. Re new points rules... I think its hilarious that many people + various politicians are getting their back up about it in the media.. it was law that you needed an NCT in the first place... it was obvious a lot of people were ignoring it due to the minor penalty involved.. they HAD to up the penalty to make sure everyone adhered to it.. and now they are complaining about the rush/backlog? LOL

i think there was the big rush Steve because people where under the impression that the cops could give you an on the spot 5 points for no NCT, but thats not the case it has to go to court.

Agreed, and shure its typically Oirish aint it!
all someone has to do is go online, book in even if its 3 months down the road, print of the email confir. and lave it in the car. If you get pulled over, show it to the cops. Only a REAL BOLLIX pig would do ya then still. Then you have ages to get the car sorted/fixed/booked in somewhere. I see no problemo.

Handy Ollie if they hadn't switched off the online booking last week because of the volume Me and thousands of other law breakers that waste steve's time were panicking big time. Ivan's right the way it was announced it sounded like Sean Garda was gonna be lashing out 5 penalty points at the side of the road first chance he got. have her booked in now so panic is over. Have to find new laws to break. I hate being compliant. It feels like you sold out on principals you may or may not have had.

Sure that's still pretty lax compared to the North, he if you fail the MOT you have to park the car up & you're only allowed it on the road to go to another MOT test.
Top tip, when you arrive at the test centre keep the engine running no matter how long you have to wait. Keeps it nice & warm for the emissions test. I've never had a car fail an MOT it's no big deal really.
