Buying a cheap runaround car and resell in Dub 1mth later?

Postby Ozi » Sat, 23 Jun 2012 5:54 +0000

Hi,
Does anyone here have any advice on whether buying a taxed/NCTd car fairly cheaply, then advertising it to resell the following month, is a really dumb idea?

Is Dublin a large enough market that it's fairly quick to sell a popular model of car, if it's fully taxed and in reasonable shape?

Since my idea of doing this with a MX5 might not happen, I am keen to get feedback on if it's possible to do this at a reasonable cost.
I'd guess it would cost us something like EUR800-1600 all up if we rented a new car, once we add in insurance surcharges, so I figure it may be possible to buy a popular model at a cheapish price and resell it (or failing that, auction it) before we leave.

Since we're coming from Australia and there seems to be a lot of Irish emigrating to Australia, do many of these emigrants just leave their cars with family or sell them on donedeals or send them to auctions? If the market is terrible for selling, maybe it's a terribly dumb idea.

Dumb or possibly OK? If so, what model do you think and what would be your plan?

Has anyone gone to the Dublin Tuesday night car auctions at Wilsons? I suppose some emigrating people may use this auction. Otherwise these are finance 'repo' cars?
What are Garda seized cars? Drug dealers? People who failed to pay fines? There are LOTS of BMW diesel 5 series on their page. Not sure how popular they are to sell, though. Celtic Tiger repos?

I noticed a Focus diesel estate there with NCT - 2004. Would that be something fairly popular since it can be a family or work car?

Thanks!
Ben

There seem to be lots of old prestige-ish cars under $1K Euros on Gumtree, too.

Saab 95 Turbo V6 Griffin EUR$900 taking a risk? Audi A6 similar age and money might be easier to resell, I don't know. Then there are all the Beemer 5 series, similar dosh.

Plenty of people selling (even giving away) cars in Dublin on Gumtree, so I suppose that's an option if we can't arrange anything beforehand.

If you know of anything that might suit, let me know.

The market is just so unpredictable right now, hard to offer advice I'm afraid :(

It would be futile to buy something without NCT/tax, so what about the resaleability of something like this?

1999 Audi A3T. With the 150bphp 5V engine; "NCT till 01/13,Tax till 06/12,great condition inside and out ". $1200

Ben, may have a contact here that can sort you out with an mx5?

His e-mail is connton@gmail.com

his name is Seán, contact him and see how it pans out..I told him you were interested in hiring for a few weeks, you will have to discuss matters like tax/insurance etc for that duration

Best of luck

John
