Motor Tax- New procedure for declaring vehicle off the road

See attached link for new procedures in relation for decladeclaring a vehicle off the road

The main issue is that you must declare that your vehicle will be off the road IN ADVANCE in the month your existing tax disk expires. If you don't you will have to pay the back tax when you go to get it taxed again.

There is a transition period for 3 months to end Sept 2013 when both systems will be in place

*************************VERY VERY IMPORTANT**********************************

If you have a car tucked away in a garage somewhere and you intend putting it back on the road at any time in the future, you MUST declare it before 30/09/2013 or you will have to back tax it to the expiry of the last tax disc!!!!!!!!!

Pass this information on to anyone who has a car tucked away. Remind old people as well, as they are likely to have cars in sheds/garages etc

Cars over 30 years are only €56 euro a year tax. They hardly gonna do much about that. Surely will just leave it at declare it off the road or pay the small fee.

Anybody with a car in storage with the intention of restoring it and putting it back on the road in years to come better declare it off the road or when the time comes to put it back on the road it will have to be back-taxed to when last taxed.

would a bit of inter-spousal car "selling" fix that?

By the looks of it even if you buy a car that has been off the road and not declared that it will have to be back-taxed. The Gardaí are being taken out of the equation altogether. So if you are thinking of purchasing a barn-find make sure that it has been declared off the road or you could be faced with a big bill making a restoration economically unviable. There are whispers of a change being made to allow for cars that have been in storage

It doesn't say anything about that though does it? I keep hearing people saying that new owners will be responsible for it but I haven't read anything to suggest tthat?

I did ask at my local motor tax office and was told that after the 3month transition period that any car not declared off the road would have to be back-taxed to when last taxed if you want to put it back on the road. The declaration lasts a minimum of 3mths up to a year which is a bit of a balls as a friends son has gone to Australia for 3-4 yrs and put a Golf GTi in storage and now he'll have to fill a declaration every year till he gets home.
