Might sound silly but I'm making this enquiry re: mx 5 and towbar. I believe pre 98 can tow (uk) and mk I's however mkII's can't. I know they are not designed to tow but I've read reports they can comfortably at certain weights and speeds. Also, my car is jap import and apparently if unlisted (????) then you can tow. Problem is insurance etc. advice please. Tks ann Sorry this should be under 'general' topic. Admin, apologies..would you mind re-directing please. Thanks

Thanks guys, I was doing homework on the net first and finding various reports..mainly that mk1 are rated but 2's and 3's are unrated and so huge probs with insurance however jdm's are somewhat different. Any ideas on towbar type for the 5 ?

I think you're right, read it on pistonheads. Towbar will fit mkII but towing something will void insurance. mk1 is fine.

No, payload is additional weight on the car.
The perfection of a Car's beauty is that nothing should be there for beauty's sake.

Anne, just checked the manual for the mark 2.5 under section "Trailer Towing" which confirms the following:
"Never tow a trailer with you Mazda"
That''s it, no more written on the subject
