Stainless exhausts Mk1 Eunos??

Hi All,

Been doing some homework on stainless exhausts for my Mk1 MX-5 (eunos), so far I've been looking at MX5 parts and Cobalt exhausts, just wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

Also as mine is a 1991 eunos do I require a cat or can I fit a bypass pipe, if so is it recommended?

I'm not looking to join the boy racer club of Ireland either. Just a normal exhaust note will be fine, with maybe a little rasp in the upper rev range being ideal I guess.

Hey Pat,

I've been doing the exact same thing researching a twin exhaust system. Firstly with a 91 you can install a cat bypass. Just be aware that this alone make the exhaust slightly louder even with the stock system. As for the brand. It seems the cheaper too good to be true are all too good to be true and some a quite loud.

I'd love to also know has anyone actually installed a borla or cobalt because these systems are expensive and it'd be nice to get it right first time...

I bought a Cobalt system last month for my Mk1 1.6. I love it. It's not loud enough to be offensive but has a deeper, throatier tone to it.
At first I thought it was the stock exhaust system until I opened a window or put the roof down !! Hit the accelerator though and you notice
the change in sound. It's a good fit and I really can't fault it and it's the single tip system.

I had the mx5 parts one on my last mk1 and I must say I really liked it . Very good fit ,looked great being polished s/s and sound was nice ,not loud at all but a nice deep sound and a rasp when you nailed it ! I too am not a buy racer!
I had the decat pipe as well again great fit and polished but make the car that bit louder ,I had an induction kit on as well which didn't help .
Start with your exhaust and see how you get on

I have a cobolt on for about 4 years, that yoke in the mid section is not a silencer and is a pain in the arse, used to be able to drive over those pillow speed bumps until I got this exhaust, recently had this section welded as one of the welds cracked from hitting stuff. Apart from that its pretty free flowing and has a really nice deep sound when you give some throttle. Not raspy at all on my decated turbo system and cruises nice and quite. The bore is also a good bit bigger than the std system, just under 2.5". The Price has gone up I paid £145. Also get the lambda bung if you have a mk1 as there is a hole for a lambda sensor in the mid section.

An appropriate sized bolt will do instead of the Lambda sensor/bung.....I think I used an M18 or an M20 bolt ?
Doesn't the standard exhaust also have a silencer situated where the mid section is located on the Cobalt ? I can't remember now !

Not sure , my previous one didn't. If anyone would like to hear the sound of the cobalt let me know.
