Insurance Coming Up

Postby Elmar » Tue, 24 May 2016 6:38 +0000

Hi,

My 1995 MX5 is up for insurance renewal next month on the 18th.
Just logged into 25plus to see have they done up a quote (this time last year I had 1 already from them in an email).
Anyway nothing was there so I went to request it manually while logged into my account and noticed I couldn't pick a car older than 2000.
My quote last year was 369.
I know some of the insurance companies were saying they didn't want to quote for cars over 2000
But where does this leave me stand I have a funny feeling from my visit to their site and lack of communication from them that I can swing for it this time round.
Any alternatives out there?
Could go classic as we have another car in the family but I want to keep my no claims bonus going which I don't think I can if I go classic on the mx and named driver
on the other car.
Jesus I'm a old fart now when I was a young man I was looking forward to cheaper insurance and no stupid insurance companies going we cant insure you and
now I find I'm back to square 1 just because I like something a little bit different Geeer!

Hi Elmar.Try Autoline or Carole Nash .Lad recently told he that he only paid 128 e for year as second car. Might be restricted to 2/3 k miles per year but who,s counting. Now thats cheap and it was with FBD.

Hi Elmar - as Robert says, I'd try Autoline (based in Coleraine)..... no one else would quote me! Just out of interest, FBD said they wouldn't insure a '93 MX5 - even though Hilly (who I was buying the car from), had it currently insured with them. Carole Nash said they wouldn't touch "that type of car" either..... (and I'm already insured with them!!!!). Oh, I should also say, when I first tried Autoline they told me I had to be a member of a "classic car club" before they would offer cover (and they asked for a membership number). They also told me that you don't earn a no-claims bonus on a classic car, you insure it as a second car, with limited mileage) and each year it is renewed on a similar basis/cost. I got fully comp, with a named driver for €250. And again, as Robert mentioned, that's limited to 3000 per year (I'll have to go check now if that is km or miles... have a feeling it's km). You can buy more miles - but advice from sales person was not to take a higher than the minimum allowance at the start, because you may not use it - rather accept the minimum and if you getting close to the limit, then call up and increase it.

My over all impressionfrom trying to get insurance cover is that they make it up as they go along.

Ya I've just got the same insurance today form autoline € 225 for 5000 miles which seems ok !
And I think it's miles not Kms even though , as it happens my cars odo is in Kms .
A main car / van is a must though , hence the 5000 mile max
Ask them if they will accept mx5 Ireland as your club , they did with me
Hope this helps you

Mine up for renewal at the beginning of June and my Quote came in at 246euro, up 50 on last year. I'm with Allianz through Autoline, fully comp with break-down cover, 5000miles per year. They do accept Mx5 Ireland as your club. You must have use of another car or van as well. This car or van must be owned by you or be a company car or van that you have use of at all times. They may look for proof. I'll give them a call and try to get it reduced a bit.

Thanks for the reply's
I got through to 25 plus and they said they would cover it its just they are not taking on anymore pre 2000 cars.
They said the quote will be with me by the weekend God only knows what it will be like.

Barney the Autoline quote I take it that's a classic car insurance policy.
I'm a named driver on my wife's car only.
Do you know if I went with the autoline policy will I still keep my full no claims bonus if I left them
and went to somebody else with say a new car that I might get in the future?

Aotoline quote is for a classic policy which would not preserve a no claims bonus. Your wifes car would count as your primary car

Just got the quote via email today.
Its gone from 369 to 713.90 are they having a laugh I'm 47 with full no claims bonus.
I think its a disgrace this not wanting to insure pre 2000 cars. The 25plus crowd clearly don't want me.
Why is the NCT cert not good enough for the insurance companies what do they know that the NCT crowd don't?
I think this is a scam I really do.

Does anybody know a company that will take a 1995 car on I don't want to do classic car insurance because I
don't want to lose my no claims bonus?
Would Autoline quote a normal policy?

No harm to ring and ask them. Good deals on limited mileage policies.

UPDATE

Have gone to various sites http://www.its4women.ie etc they all wont quote.
The classic is a non runner as Im not saving a couple of hundred euro now to be fleeced down the road by the insurance companies
because I don't have a no claims bonus anymore and have just bought a newish car.

I put my details into a few sites with a 2004 mx5 1.8 value 4000 and guess what the insurance is only 450
I have to say this is a real pain and so unfair.
We cant run my wife's car and 2 other cars 1 been classic.
I really love my MX5 mk1 especially now as its starting to look really old.
I don't have the funds to buy a newish mx5 and don't really like the look of them.
I'm in the market price wise for up to a 2004 but sure in 4 years time I will be in the same boat and cant
in anyway justify spending 4 grand every 4 years on a car.
I'm going to take the hit this year with 25plus but that's it as I know already they will just hike it up again next year.
I know I'm repeating my self but I'm so pi..ed off about this situation I cant believe at 47 years of age I'm having theses problems
I remember Ireland back in 80's when there was no real competition and anything slightly different you paid for cant believe it going back that
way again in 2016.
Sorry rant over:)

Hi Elmar , but I am not sure if you will have owned the car in 4 years time they can refuse to insure it .I though they only dislike a customer actually insuring old car for 1st time.I know dozens os people with old cars and not issues as long as they are NCT,d. Think its down to first time insuring old car.
Dont forget in 4 years you should have 4 years no claims bonus and also may be in position to run toatl 3 cars (with cheap insurance on the mx5) AND lots people including myself only taxing for 6 months (summer ) and SORN it until next summer (that wya you only pay approx 300e tax but cant drive really in winter etc

Robert, I use my MX5 everyday so the 6 months tax is out for me.
I love the car so much I just don't want to drive anything else. It never stops putting a smile on my face while driving it.
It's true once your on the insurance books they will keep you on with an old car but they just hike up the insurance renewal quote.
25plus want 713 from me this year for my 1.8 1995 mx5 but for the same car under a reg of 2004 and same insurance details they only want 450
What's the point of the NCT--The government are saying my car is fit for the road---But the insurance companies are saying its more likely to crash
I'm going this year to go with the 25plus route. No doubt this time next year i'll be back here moaning again that they have bought the renal quote up to a grand
due to some unpublished insurance statistic
