Towing mx5

Has anyone ever used an A frame on their mk1 mx5? to transport it to track etc..

Not that im aware off.i got a lend of one off a friend the uses it all the time.i know on some cars it cant be used due to the set up of the wisbones.just wondering has anyone used one before on one

Ya i dunno if the mx5 can... i went and got my full trailer licence and bought a proper trailer earlier in the year tis some balls as i only have the car at the track 5-6 times a year

I also thought A frame towing was illegal.Insurance could be the big issue really.Are A frames covered in event of accident??.I know its unlikely but you never know ....and then you have the famous Traffic Corp who know everything abut car /truck/towing related regulations. My info is car has to be on truck or trailer or having 1 only axle on the ground NOT 2 axles on the ground

There defo something about having both axles rolling. Different rules if you tow with a spec frame.

I have used an a-frame on my mk1 ,on occasion, not my own but belongs to a friend. It's an impressive bit of kit, not a diy job. Was once stopped at a checkpoint while towing, had hazards flashing on the mx5, was advised by the cop to have a light board and a sign on the mx5 "on tow"....

There are requirements , I believe, in relation to the ratio between the weight of the towing vehicle and the vehicle being towed..probably has to do with braking capabilities..and stay well below the speed limit...

Weight is something like car being towed cant be more than 80% of tow car ??Its called "Gross Train weight" but you can google towing capacity of any car if you have make, engine size etc

I was told that if all four wheels are on the road that the towed vehicle must be road-legal i.e. taxed, insured and NCT'd. I would imagine as the towed weight would be more than 750kg that you would also need a licence for towing. I've towed my Mx5 with a Citroen Berlingo Multispace using an A-frame without any problems but was told by the frames owner to be careful at roundabouts as the towed car could push the towing car out of line if travelling too fast. I also heard of someone hitting a gate pillar turning into his home when the towing car was pushed as he hit gravel at the entance.
