Fuel Tank & Fuel Gauge needle

Postby Jabout » Wed, 30 Nov 2016 2:12 +0000

I just filled up the car (1.8 litre mk1), when the fuel gauge needle was directly in line with the empty white tab on the left.

And managed to squeeze in 40.44 litres.

Supposedly the tank holds 48 litres.

So in theory I had over 7.5 litres before really hitting empty - almost a fifth of a tank.

Has anyone ever run out of fuel in a 1.8 MK1- if so where was the needle on the fuel gauge?

Thanks for this, sometimes it's good to know when you should be anxious (or not) about stretching it.

Fill up a Jerry can and find out. As long as your not full throttle at high revs it shouldn't do any damage. I'm interested myself but the cars off the road for winter.

You cant really rely fully on the needle. Most people tend to find out themselves how far car wil travel when "empty".Best to keep gauge out of the red zone.Mk1 1.6 uses smaller tank so maybe it was changed before?
