Hi guys Does anyone have any reasons not to buy a mark 4 MX5 at the moment? After getting 18 years of enjoyable motoring from my 1999 Mk2, I am feeling tempted by the new RF (retractable fastback). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBtaGLN70AQTom.

First editions had gearbox issues which Mazda would not accept. The latest ones have different gearbox so obviously there was issues.Check out Roddisons Motorsport problems with them.I can send you link if needed.

I have had a Mk2.5 Icon and a standard Mk3. Bought the Mk4 2 litre sport last January, drove it around the European mainland during the summer and had no problem with it. Would say it is the nicer of the three to drive, but there again it is new. Everyone has their own views, to me the RF is a Targa top, even the Mk3 cc was open top motoring.
I do.......... No money !!!! John
That's probably the only reason anyone should have for not buying a MX5. For what it's worth, I really like the shape of the RF (I find it a tad more retro looking). Either way, don't think you'd go wrong with either the full roof down version or the Targa. Graham

I've been looking the Roddisons Motorsport posts, and I also found something on Mazda's website that I have not seen mentioned on any online reviews. There is an extra on-going expense of €110 per year in owning an RF.
Roadster 1.5 ..... Road Tax €280 ... Because CO2 emissions 139 g/km
RF version 1.5 ... Road Tax €390 ... Because CO2 emissions 142 g/km
Same car, same engine, just 40kg heavier, 3 more g/km = €110 extra tax every year
I agree that the RF is virtually a Targa Top. Reminds me of the Fiat X-19 I had for a few months, back in 1980 before I bought my Spitfire1500 and got into real open top motoring. Also I have not sat in an RF yet but from youtube clips, it looks like there is no parcel shelf behind the seats as the rear window is vertical.

Indeed. I wouldn't have thought/ considered that. I would have assumed it was the same car apart from the slightly bigger opening up top.

Spotted a 161G softop parked in oranmore last night, lovely looking car but I still think the better car would have a retractable hardtop similar to the older model ( don't know if it's available as an option) as it would offer better security when parked and have the feeling of a proper roof during our crap weather

For what it's worth I still prefer the soft top ND as I think it's a "proper" mx5 but I thought I read some place that Mazda expect 80% of sales to be rf and for a daily I can see why people might go for that , will it mean that the soft tops second hand will be the best value or because they are rarer will command a premium ? .......if my 80% is correct They are dropping in value second hand in England .....so start saving Brian

Hi It would seem that the extra 40kg of weight on the RF causes the combined fuel figures to be 100cc per 100km more on the RF this extra 1cc of fuel must supply the extra 3 grams of CO2 per km. It's listed as CO2/km on Mazda's website and on this site, that shows all the rates.. http://www.mywheels.ie/motor-tax-rates-ireland/ but shouldn't it be CO which is carbon monoxide--the dangerous one. CO2 is actually carbon dioxide --the good one, especially for plants. Tom

Congratulations!! I was in Lanzarote last week and passing a car hire office I saw an mx5 RF outside with the company decals on the side..went in and asked how much..€70 for a day...said I'd think about it and come back in the morning ...of course, didn't sleep a wink in anticipation, but the bloody car was gone next morning . So I ended up hiring a fiat 124 spyder instead, same price, great fun, but raging that I missed the chance to try the RF.. John
