My zipper is stuck

Postby Pops » Tue, 17 Sep 2019 4:28 +0000

Softop zipper seems to have skipped a couple of teeth, it just about opens enough to fold the roof but I’m not sure how long it’ll last. The screen is in pretty poor condition as well but the rest of it looks fairly good. I’ve been thinking of getting a mohair replacement for ages but not too sure it’s worth the money, any opinions?

Rest of roof looks reasonably good but the pictures don’t show how hard it is to see through the screen

Tried a good hard tug down past it? Has worked for me in the past, you do run the risk of derailing it tho.
Autoglyms super resin Polish will clear up the window.

Got a price for new mohair with glass....€1040 fitted + strap conversion and €24 for tension cables , ouch.
I don’t think I’ll try forcing the zipper, it looks like it opens just enough to fold the roof, anyway what’s the worst that can happen only split the plastic screen.
Steve, I’ve tried all sorts of polish but I not autoglym, unfortunately the plastic is too badly pitted to ever be clear again

Meant to say, that's a crazy price...

Fitting is straight forward so don't worry about that.

Weak Sterling at the moment so

Thanks for the info Steve, some much better prices there. The one on eBay is €96 for delivery  I did find a replacement screen section advertised somewhere which would be a much cheaper option but of course I can’t find it now so on with the search.

Would prefer to have the option of zipping it open myself...

That's a bummer. Same happened me before, and I went for the option Steve suggested above...... gave it a good hard tug (ooooeeerrrr missus), and it "retracked" again, but was always a bit sticky around the area each time I zipped/unzipped it.

I looked in the last copy of Total MX5 magazine, and found this advert:

The price you quoted seems very expensive.

Thanks mrges, that’s the same guy as Steve linked to who wants €96 for delivery .
I’m still thinking of the zipper one I found on eBay , cabriotex vinyl whatever that is with zip window for a total around €256, on the other hand I’m debating with myself if it’s worth doing at all.

Went back on eBay again, I like this one as it has a life expectancy of 15 years compared to the 3 ish years of their vinyl option

Total price of around €360, Christmas present from the kids maybe or even from me to myself

I bought a MK2.5 mohair roof and frame that was like new from Robert and I fitted it to my MK1. It has the bonus of a glass window. Would you not consider that option ?

Aghh, I've recommended him to other posters so many times but didn't think of him for myself, thanks for the reminder

Nice.
It's likely the original photo file is too large unfortunately, the forum has a restriction on upload file size to keep the loading speed up. Screenshots are smaller so it works.
