Under arch & wing protectant

i have the front wings and bumper off my Mx5 for fitting non rusty wing replacements for the NCT. While they are off I though it might be worth while applying some protectant to the new(er) wings and under arch/body where there is some signs of gently corrosion.

I fully intend on doing a full under coating in the very near future but definitely wont have the time to do it this week before the retest. Any recommendation for some off the shelf treatments to apply in this case for a light top up??

Looking at Krust / harrerite / waxoil from Halfords etc I wont have time to order anything better online this week. Or should I just wait and do properly at a later date, its not bad as is ? I could also just give the area a liberal spray of ACF-50 which I have a can on hand.

The link doesn't work for me but if you have the wings off then it's well worth doing the treatment.
I think these are what you are thinking of

The kurust goes a very long way if applied by brush and then use the aerosol treatment after, the underseal might be a bit thin but there's enough in the can to do the wings once so maybe get 2 cans as there is most likely more rust on the bottom of the A pillars / front of sill area
If you have access to a compressor a local motor factors should have a kit including the applicator gun, refills for these are about €10 and cover much better than the aerosol

would you lightly sand before applying the krsut ? i think il get hte paint on waxoild too, less messy that then aerosol, don't have compressor, but its on the shopping list

I'd most likely give it a going over with a wire brush and clean it with something like white spirit or panel wipe before applying the kurust, allow the kurust to dry and then apply the underseal, the brush on underseal will give better results as the parts you want to treat are easily accessible, for other parts of the car a spray might be better
A pretty decent compressor coming soon if not in shops already

I bought a new compressor and my old one(similar to the one above) is sitting in the shed doing nothing so if your in the galway area you know what to do

That look ok , 25L I was thinking of getting a 50L one at some stage. I've read 25L might struggle for larger spraying projects ? or is 25 L more that enough for DIY bits & pieces
Tell me more about your old one tho ?

Not too sure how old it is, probably about 10 years old or even more but it has resprayed two cars and done various other bits, very handy to have but I don't think it's strong enough to operate air powered sanders or such.
It's doing nothing but taking up space now

thoght id throw in a few pictures of the job.
bumper and arches off, under liner was the most fiddly bit. Some nuts rusted out too.

Rub a dub dub, with degreaser and washing up liquid then hosed off outside.

clean up wiht the grinder, and wire brush

treated with kurust
Ready for road

The daily washed as well

2 costs of Hummerite underbody seal (messy goo)

https://photos.app.goo.gl/kKSvNAxHRPkpVGfz8
good for another few years, i treated the inside of the wings too give the other one rotted from inside out and only took 5 mins.

The initial cleaning and prep was the most time consuming and dirty bit. I am going to do the rear arches and back bumper area next, then under body, I think i will try out the aerosols next as opposed to painting on.
i have seen on various forums people paying to get this done commercially and i cannot see anyway that you could get his all done in one day withtout skipping corners and painting over years of rust and much built up, which maybe is why people see rust again forming under the under seal.

Great results and well worth the effort, you caught the front chassis rails just in time by the looks of the pictures, might be worth spraying the waxoil inside them as well

the golfs great, very comfy, pretty fast 200bhp, tracking & handling are excellent, ok on juice, & has been super reliable, DSG gear box is excellent but uninvolving. Brakes are soulless too. cost 3k in 2017 and being dailyed since with very little drama,

3k for 4 years in a car such as that is cheap motoring, I put 300,000 miles on a 03 1.9 tdi passant that needed constant maintenance, I was glad when I could afford to get rid of it
