intercooler kit

Looking at getting an intercooler in.

Not sure about intercooler and pipe sizes.

thanks Steve, I have had a read through it. Seems more complicated than I thought, but Joe Perez doesn't do things in half measures, look at his mounting bracket.

How about the intercooler I posted the link for, is it a fin or bar and plate, what's the difference?

There is also a smaller version of this intercooler with 2" openings would it be more suitable, I'm looking more at building a reliable turbo system more than out and out power.

I set up a CAI last week during the cold snap and set the bipes to pull from 18 base to 10 between 2500rpm and 3800 rpm on 99 octane fuel, the extra torque makes the transition into boost almost seamless, more like an SC. I am afraid to run this set up all the time for fear of knock, as yet I have not heard any.

Anyway, do these parts seem like a good basis for getting an IC set up?

I will be removing the AC before I attempt the install

oh, that one your linked to looks like bar + plate (I think.. heh).

Measure your turbo's outlet size and the intake manifolds inlet size, then pick the intercooler with openings as close to these sizes.

Have you a knock sensor or a WideBand O2 sensor? You prob wouldn't hear most of the knock.. :-( How much boost are you running now?

Thanks Steve, I think I might use this kit as a starting point then.

I'm running 6psi at the moment, with a bipes set to pull from 18 to 10 degrees (but I will drop it back to 8 tomorrow), only use 99 octane E5 fuel, I also have an olderguy O2 clamp which is adding fuel before going into WOT (starts at about 5 Hg), this is adjustable. That's it really on the engine side basic greedy kit with stainless bolts and manifold relief cuts and the waste gate adjusted 2 turns oh and a k&N in place of the kit filter.

I don't have a knock sensor and I'm on a narrowband O2 sensor, so not much point in getting a fuel ratio gauge.

I thought you could hear knock, I once had a lancia that sounded like some marbles rattling around in a tin can under heavy load.
I did an up hill 4th gear pull full throttle starting at 2000rpm with no unusual noises.

I looked at the J&S knock sensor but it seems to have timing control in it too, is there a recommended knock sensor that is not too expensive?

Do i need a wideband O2 sensor?
So many new thing to learn.

I will post some pics soon, just about to fit the hard dog deuce. (my wife's suggestion, maybe she loves me after all, either that or I'm under insured)

just finished grooved/vented discs and green stuff all around.

You can hear some knock but not all. Most of the knock I had to dial out occured from 5krpm upwards, def couldn't hear it above engine/exhaust noise but the knock sensor in the Link ECU picked it up.

To tune your inboost fueling/timing properly.. probably.. I plan on getting one in the future (am kind of flying blind at the moment using FlyingMiata's tuned fuel + timing maps for my boosted rows, they are conservative enough tho AFAIK).

I will email the guy tomorrow, looks like a knock sensor is an essential part once turbo'd.

I got the harddog from mx5 mad 340 stg I think and 40 shipping, it's a lot bigger and heavier than a style bar, half of it sits underneath the back shelf.

I will post some pics, maybe do a write up on the install 4-6hr job apparently.

As for the IC think I'll look at a slimed down version of Joe Perez's install.
found another thread with an easy bracket design. I'll work up my rusty brazing skills for the pipe outlets, and I'm sure there will be a lot of head scratching and cursing.
