Front suspension

Postby voomvoom » Tue, 04 Aug 2009 11:18 +0000

Looking for a good set of front shocks/springs for 1990 1.6 that is currently running on standard. just replaced rear springs due to breakage last week & while on lift saw front left broke (was ok when ordering new rear ones). To add to my woes the window cables on drivers side broke while at the garage :( and mx5 parts are out of stock. Recent overhaul of brakes, exhaust, springs plus welding of sills have me low on funds so be reasonable

Did mx5parts give any indication of how long they expect to be out of stock for??

Why not try either maguire1234 or mx5ideways?,I know they both broke 5's recently and they might have a complete regulator available...be sure to indicate left or right side..very simple to install.

Thanks for the leads. I'll probably end up waiting the 4 weeks for new ones. Then i'll stick them in while it's off road for winter. Any advice on fitting welcome. I have in the past fitted a roof but these cables look tricky. These are some cars I have mine 4 years but bought from a pal who had it since 1992 so I can say with certanity that the roof lasted (admitedly with some patching) 18 years. Exhaust still original bar the rear silencer which limped to last week. window cables and suspension to last week. I know people say thats coz its only a summer car but mine had several long lay ups by previous owner which is detrimental to running gear. This will be my first winter resting it (have banger van for dog so i'll use that). It's just pity all this stuff going together.

Any of the workshop manuals ( I have the Rod's one) will have a detailed description of how to replace the cables. Let me know when you're doing the job and I'll photocopy and either e-mail or post/fax the relevant page(s) to you.

Thanks. That will be much appreciated. I have the haynes manual but while it gives plenty info on regular mechanics and stuff that never goes wrong it gives sfa on hoods and cables.

No mystery to the cables. Connected to the front of the frame by a rivet and to the rear by a spring. Put roof almost fully down, unhook from spring, pull cable through frame/roof and replace with new rivet/small bolt+nut, then rerun cable when fitting new hood.

Regarding the cables. It's the electric window ones I've to replace not the roof. Thanks satfan54 for the offer. Where are you located. In kerry myself. Are you going on the kerry run in sept if so I could collect then. I would be tempted to replace springs only but my nct last oct only just passed imbalance & my springs were ok back then. Will cover you for a drink if they suit.

You are welcome to the shocks but the chance of me going to Kerry is slim.I am in Dublin and can give them to anyone to take to you.

Peter.

Shur half of Dublin are from Kerry and I know they're always welcome in the Kingdom but after last Sunday they might be slow to go. 31 years is a long time and it's hurting.
