Thoughts on going classic...

Well, I'm thinking of adding to my collection of modern classics

I love classic BEEMERS and I'm looking for something pre 79' so as to avail of the vintage tax and reasonable insurance. So, please ye of classic car knowledge, please give me your thoughts on this -

Those are great cars, very solid and reliable, and old-skool GT. I was close to going for one before buying the blue Triumph. Very practical car too, huge boot.

Did you see the Wheeler Dealers episode where they renovate one ? Very good.

Anyway, yes, do it. That car is miles ahead most other stuff from that era - eg. make my Stag look fragile and very old yet there's only three years between them.

Id google it to see, most of the classic car mags have done features on them in the past. There is probably lots of info out there in cyberland.

Head over to http://www.boards.ie --> rec --> motoring --> classics and have a poke around. Think the topic came up a while ago. Or Octane.ie maybe.

Rust is the only big worry - everything else can be fixed.replaced. Not that these cars rust badly, the metalwork is VERY thick.

Apart from that, it's a pretty modern car for its time (disc brakes, injection, etc) so just go at it as you would a normal car.

no Frank seriously, the doll driving it was gorgeous. The second or third day i was waiting , she stopped and politely asked if i wanted a lift. I declined as she was only going to Dunleer, but the sound of the big 6, the smell of her perfume....ill tell ya...........down shep!!!!

thanks, rang the owner - Hmmmmmmmmmm, it needs work. I drilled him down for lots of info and it has some rust, brakes aren't great (says it might need a servo so i probably does), track rod ends needed etc....

Money pit?

hmmm... depends on the price. If < 2K, might still be a goer unless the rust is bad.

e500 would see the brakes replaced - discs, pads, and master cylinder.
e150 for the trackrod ends

Maybe another e200 for bits and bobs. Discount these numbers if DIY. One good thing about classics is that usually for every euro you put into it, the value of the car increases by the same. It's been free motoring for me for years.

This particular one looks okay from a distance, although I would wonder if the chrome wheelarch extensions are hiding something:

+1 def do it! Its great, but be aware, you'll also need lots of time, money (parts + fuel.. lots of fuel) and tools Oh, and a disposition that remains calm when you have to ring roadside assist
