Hi all,

So tell me. Whats it like owing a Red Mk1? Im very tempted by one, I think my own car is beyond getting back on the road without spending a fortune so I might use it as a donor car and take out my interior etc. Is red hard to keep? is the stock red in need of compounding a bit due to fading? Ill miss my own colour as it was very special but you cant keep a car cause its a one off paint job I guess :(

Good man! The REAL sportscar colour :bom: :mrgreen:

Bit of fading can happen on the original nose but as leamyj showed us, it can be brought back to as new with some skilled polishing.

Jeez Fla, colour is secondary to the actual car as far as I'm concerned. Remember the grief I had to put up with over the oxidation on my red mk1?? I eventually got it removed and looking brilliant, only to crash it a few days later :(

If you can source a car in good nick, don't worry about the colour..that's my advice. Why not use a donor to get your own one back on the road??

Hey John, I have polishing equipment in the gargae and compounders so I dont mind doing the hard work. My only disappointment about the colour is I spent a grand getting the other one done but in fairness I got great use of it. As for using a donor to get mine going, Id say ive too much to do. My ECU cabling is damaged, the bonnet it bad, the engine could be sick. Shes fairly bad now, saying that There are a lot of things I can take from her that are healthy or sell on so Ill see. I have to hammer out a good deal with someone first before I buy one though!!

Have to contradict you there I think BRG is THE only colour to have !!! But then I am English so probably won't be agreed with !! :lol:

Oh God, we're not gonna start ANOTHER long debate about what colour is best, are we?? :lol: :lol: :lol:

Mel, sorry to say (not) but some members here decided a while ago that we'd refer to the colour of your car as IRG as history shows that some Irish guy raced in that particular colour long before some British bloke..please don't be offended :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

As you're new here, you're probably beginning to realise that we like to have a laugh :wink:

Not a hope am I calling it IRG You'll have to put up with BRG from me I'm afraid !!
No we definately won't start arguing about colour as we women always win a fight anyway ha !! :lol:

Am looking forward to going on my first run soon, hopefully the meet up in Blarney on 25th June.
Just started to refurb my wheels and that's coming on great .

Bit of history below:


British racing green, officially known as deep brunswick green is the international motor racing colour of Great Britain.

The dark green colour was used for the uniforms of the cavalrymen of Braunschweig, Germany, and later by British riflemen in the late eighteenth century. The current British Royal Family traces its origin to the House of Hanover, also known as the House of Brunswick, Hanover Line, and Brunswick Green therefore acquired British national symbolism.

It was chosen as the colour that large, fast British railway engines were painted, such as the Flying Scotsman, starting in the late nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, this heritage of speed resulted it in becoming the colour chosen for British racing cars in international competition, before the displaying of the logos of sponsors became common.

In the days of the Gordon Bennett Cup, every component of a car had to be produced in the competing country, as well as the driver being of that nationality. The race was hosted in the country of the previous year's winner. When Selwyn Edge won the 1902 race for Britain it was decided that the 1903 race would be held in Ireland. As a mark of respect for their hosts the British cars were painted green and this has remained the traditional colour for British racing cars to this day.

William Grover-Williams, driving for Britain, won the very first Monaco Grand Prix in a dark green Bugatti. This colour became known as British Racing Green and was regarded as the "official" colour between 1962 and 1973, when British teams dominated Formula One and won twelve World Championships.The history of the famous greens came to an end when Jaguar,the last team in Formula One bearing the colour was sold to Red Bull by Ford in 2004.The New Red Bull Racing team abandoned the British Racing Green henceafter.

Speaking of the Gordon Bennet cup, I was out for a spin on Sunday afternoon and went down to the Gandon Inn near Portlaoise to have a look at some of the cars participating in the Gordon Bennet commemoration rally...all I can say is WOW!! Every kind of car, from a Baby Austin to an Opel Kadet SRI ( I think).
We have got to organise a run around this event next year.
The main part of the rally will happen this weekend around Mount Wolseley in Carlow

Well just to throw another spanner in the works about colours. I hated the BRG paint job on mine so painted it Jaguar Emerald Green. Which is a lot more Irishy sounding than BRG and looks way way better. Mazda would do well to copy me and bring it out as an official colour!! As for the red one I was looking at, sale fell through. Your man wouldnt hagle. I said to him, I dont want your wheels or stereo or seats, thinking that would knock a few bob off as the wheels were nice. No budge, but then again he sounded Polish and he wasnt getting my sense of humour!!

Looking at a black one now!!

Well you couldn't get more British than Jaguar ha ha they are made in the Midlands in the UK. But I'm still keeping mine in the original paint of BRG !!

Now maybe we had better stop being mean about colours and get on with being nice friends on our favourite topic which is after all THE MX5 regardless of colour or model. Let's all play nicely..........
