Pros and cons of buying a 1991 automatic mx5?

Postby appreciation society » Thu, 29 Sep 2011 10:57 +0000

Hi - I am thinking of getting a 1991 automatic MX-5. Its in mint condition but I was wondering if an automatic is the way to go. Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated. Does anyone know if this qualifies for classic insurance and if so who would you recommend?

Best Wishes

Hi Dan,
My car is an 1992 1.6 auto and its great... It is a bit underpowered, but it was a conscious decision to go for the 1.6. What with speed cameras, nose to tail traffic and insurance/tax issues, we do not regret going for the auto. It is so relaxing to drive, especially in town...
It depends on what you want, a manual is more involving, with more room for tuning, but having spent 20 years with an MGBGT the MX5 is a breath of fresh air....
We are with AXA, no problem getting insurance, but not quite old enough for classic insurance yet.

Do you think it would be easy to sell an auto - I plan on keeping it in the mint condition I buy it in.

I think Autos are slower to sell. I have an Auto 3.2 Pajero that I wouldnt swap for anything and I love whole its so chilled and it cruises beautifully. Thats exactly opposite to what I want in an mx5. But its personal choice. Have a spin in one and see do you like it. It wouldnt be my cup of tea but hey, I hate Guinness too, maybe Im the odd one!!

Cheers

A good automatic will always sell , albeit it might sell more slowly.
Target market - lazy drivers, elderly or disabled, maybe even all 3

I had an auto briefly during the summer , and tbh , it was pretty nice to drive. It didnt have the brown trouser capability of my supercharged rs but it was very very fun.

I wouldn't buy an auto but then its down to personal choice. I think it would be difficult to sell on.
