autocheck wrote:yeah we have wiper linkage for mk2 and possibly the aftermarket air filter is effecting the emissions but if you put 1 ltr of dipethane (available in any good motor factor)and PUT THE FULL 1 LTR IN at low fuel the day before you do your retest it will pass no problem as the car is basically running on a mix of petrol/dipethane.I have done this about 10 times without fail. ignore the instructions on the bottle!!!!!!call me if you need anymore details .Thanks Robert

may get you thro the test but doesn't solve the engine running shite in the long term. A well tuned engine wont need it.

So what would you suggest to resolve the problem?

A proper tune up.

Thanks for that. Now, knowing very little about mechanics, how do I go about getting aproper tune up?

Start with a full service , oil, filter, plugs , air filter. Check erg valve is clean if fitted. They block apparently. Then a good hard drive up a long hill at full throttle to clean things out. The Italian tune up method.

Your cat may be knackered which could cause a fail.

Followed all the advice - put new cat on, topped up with fuel cleaner and fitted the wiper linkage I got off Autocheck (thanks Robert). The mechanic who put on the cat said that it had been replace already and that it was the wrong one - it was only suitable for a small 1100 cc car. Went back for re-test and thankfully got the all clear with the emissions reading like that of a new car - happy days to be back on the road, legally :D All we want now is plenty of :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Thanks everyone for the advice :thumright:
