Flyin' Miata FMII complete turbo system

Postby franksm » Mon, 25 Mar 2013 11:05 +0000

Finally for sale. This is the full cremola, all you need to double the horsepower in your car. This is the Flyin' Miata 2 turbo system (FMII) - it's a full bolt-on, bespoke to the MX5 kit. Four to six hours needed to fit this, and it's completely reversable if needs be.

This kit includes every to the last bolt - the turbocharger, manifold, intercooler, pipework, 2.5" exhaust right from the downpipe to the dual-exit-tailpipes, 2.5" freeflow catalytic converter, electronic boost controller, blow-off-valve, special PCV valve, oil catch can, air filter, oil fittings, water fittings and a full electronics package - Link ECU, AEM wideband O2 controller, updated NB O2 sensor, AEM WB O2 sensor, 440cc injectors, knock sensor, boost gauge, MAP sensor., LINK display/kepyad, Link serial-USB interface, Compaq IPAQ portable computer.

The turbocharger is a Garrett M24 watercooled unit and uses standard water and oil fittings already installed on the standard MX5 motor. Without the electronics and boost controller, this will run to 6psi and make 180hp. This can be adjusted to 200hp easily enough. With the electronics, this will make 202hp at 12psi, and 242hp at 14psi. 0 to 60 has been measured at 5.1 seconds in this setup, but can go sub-5 with a bit more tuning. Tuning can be done over the keypad or the IPAQ computer, or can be done with a laptop and free software (DataLogLab http://www.dataloglab.com)

The M24 is the ball-bearing version, so is practically spinning all the time, even at idle. Absolutely zero lag with this unit. Peak power is way less than 3000rpm. In terms of driving, it's like having a 2.8 litre straight-6 engine under the bonnet. Power is solid all the way to 5000rpm after which it levels off. You can easily bolt on a larger turbo and have it pull all the way to 7000rpm - this means 260 to 300hp, but peak power tends to be at 5000rpm so lots of lag.

The standard brakes and diff are fine for this horsepower, but for 12psi and above, the clutch needs updated otherwise you risk wearing through it in short order.

Selling this for EUR1800 for the full shebang.

Note - the turbine outlet and downpipe were updated about a year ago to newer items from Flyin Miata. Everything is in perfect condition - all of the connectors and clamps are race-quality. The cat and exhaust are stainless steel, no rust at all (they look grubby in the pics). The intercooler has some flaked paint but it's made of solid aluminium, so it's purely cosmetic.

From the outside, the car looks like a normal 130hp MX5 - with dual pipes.

Probably stupid question but does this just fit/suit just the 1.6 or will it do a 1.8?

Wow, nice complete kit. Very unusual to get absolutley everything in one go. I don't think you will have much trouble shifting this. I have to ask, why did you take it out?

Cheer lads, it is for the 1.8
It will fit a 1.6 with a different manifold, but manifolds run to > eur500 for a non-breaky one.

I took it out as I just wanted to go back to NA. I miss throwing the car around at max revs, 16 valves screaming.

With the turbo, it's insane. First gear is useless unless you're easy on the clutch. Second gear comes and goes in a blink. By the time you look at the speedo, it's doing illegal speeds. Power is addictive, it really is fun, but for me I want an MX5 now rather than an R8.

Hope that explains it. Might be wussy going back to a car that goes to 60 in 8 seconds rather than 5, but I already have fast car for everyday use although it is a non-5.

Plus I want a project, I am having fun converting the new 5 - have a new catback and a new 4-2-1 manifold ready to go in once the snow goes away

This is a totally AWESOME kit as I've seen it in action on the car myself and it's a fantastic price !
I'd say this kit would be snatched up if it was posted up on the Nutz Forum in the UK, it appears Mx5 owners over there have more free cash to play with than us Mx5 owners here in Ireland (ah well, the UK is not in/on the Euro after all is it).
Best of luck with the sale !!

Sorry for the spam, great deal i think and it will be snapped up in the UK.

There's an FM ACT clutch in the car but I don't plan on removing the gearbox or engine just yet as I have nowhere to store them other than in the car.
I wouldn't recommend the ACT though - it grips likea b!tch but is *very* hard on the foot. As Steve will tell ya...

Couple of people asking for breakout of this, that and the other so here it is broken down:

Turbo and intercooler: EUR1300
Exhaust and cat: EUR300
AEM Wideband controller and sensor: EUR100
Link ECU, injectors and all the electronics: EUR400

Or the lot for EUR1800

Think it's 0.60 A/R on the compressor, 0.64 on the turbine, Sean.
That's from memory. It's a Garrett M24 according to the label.
It's a fairly small turbo, hence the lack of lag. Ball bearing rather than sleeve bearing.
