Engine Warning Light

Bought MX5 2.5 earlier in the year. It was not driven by previous owner for nearly a year. The engine warning light is permanently on . I was told that the EGR valve needed replacing as it is a common fault with MX5s. I replaced the valve ( twice due to possible fault on first) and warning light still persists. Can anyone throw some light on this annoyance?. Car drives wonderfully and engine sounds very smooth. Occasional smell of petrol fumes in cock pit. Car was fully serviced and timing belt replaced.

Petrol fumes ?..check the plumbing from the filler to the tank..can be accessed through the boot..make sure all clips are tight!! DO NOT use any form of naked flame.. Does the mk2.5 have a obd2 port? (diagnostic connector)...most mechanics have the equipment to analyse cars with obd2...you probably need to have the car diagnosed for faults..if the car doesn't have obd2 then you could enquire from a mazda dealer as to the cost of this...prepare yourself though, they tend not to be cheap. Someone else here may be able to offer further advice...

As John said. Would the light not stay on until you clear the ecu of fault codes?

Not sure if this helps but had a fault light on my Toyota Avensis. Cost me 30 to get it read at Toyota dealer which I thought was ok. I then asked would I have to pay another 30 to come back to get the fault cleared after I fixed the problem. They said to disconnect the battery for half an hour.... it worked fault light cleared....

If dissconecting the battery doesn't work and there is an obd2 port i can read and reset it for you if your near Athy in Kildare.

Thanks Lads, Sorry for my delayed response as I was away for a few days .Really appreciate your replies. There is a diagnostic port in engine compartment. I will try the battery disconnection too. Car is due NCT soon and want to have sorted in advance. As for the petrol, it seems to have disappeared.Thanks Again.

If it has OBD plug I can read and erase the codes with my Sealey 50e jobbie,but sometimes a fault showing up can be caused by another item being fault yie Faulty cat can cause lambda sensor to show fault but its worth a try .Anyway its 6.45am so you know what I mean !!

Is it jap import? If so its probably obd1 (not obd2) and you can diagnosis with 12v led.
If obd2 you can get cheap code reader/clearer on eBay for under 20 euro.

Disconnecting battery may clear ecu codes for sure, it does for obd1 jap imports anyway.

Hi Lads,Jap Import 1.8 SVR. Roadster 2003 MK2.5 by the way. Guess what? Disconnected battery terminal and left for about 20mins. Soon as I re-connected, light went off after a few seconds. Hopefully it will stay off.Just wondering ,if I needed to replace EGR valve in the first place?? Might put original back over the weekend to check. Really appreciate ALL your comments and expert advice. Thank a lot as I did not want to push the engine too hard in case I do more damage. Great Forum.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but its likely EML light will come on again if fault is still in system unless of course EGR valve cured the fault.The EML light is just reading the system ,as I have put several EML lights out before for people on various types of cars but they nearly always come back on again until fault is rectified.Of course that's the whole idea ...
