Been looking at this as a possibility for next year. It looks like fun as it covers The B500, Furka Pass, San Bernardino Pass and the legendary Stelvio Pass. Throw in stunning cities, a ride on the world's longest toboggan run, trips to the Ferrari and Lamborghini Museums, drinks, laughter and mayhem, and you have the ultimate car rally. I'm actually head down this way, sailing on Thursday morning ! Across the UK and then a ferry to Calais from Dover. Weather permitting, I'm hoping to hit the Nurburgring and take in the Spa Classic (16th to 18th). There's rumour that they will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the MX-5 launch there but I'm not sure if that is for definite. Hence me missing the run on Monday - I spent the whole weekend prepping my car for the trip. One thing I will say about the Stelvio is that it can be disappointing.....the route is rarely quiet i.e. throw in camper vans, cyclists etc and it can be frustrating ! You have some hope of overtaking these on a motorbike but not in a car.......

I would love to do this, would you have any idea of the total cost (approx) inc fuel, hotels, ferry, food etc?

Expenses
£225 per team of two, additional passengers are only £50pp. Ferry crossings. 5 nights of accommodation, from camping to 5 star luxury, it's up to you. Food and drink. Fuel 1265 miles there plus 850 miles back (2115 miles total) Tolls approximately £20. Vignette to drive on Swiss roads - £29. European Breakdown cover (optional).

Fuel will be your biggest outlay. As Andy mentioned, camping will keep accommodation cost down dramatically but this mightn't suit everyone (some prefer hotels etc). Personally, I would avoid motorways/tolls as they are boring as f*ck. They are great for making up time but really are dull. As for ferries, I'm going across the UK to sail from Dover to Calais. If you want to keep the costs down then avoid the Eurotunnel. DFDS ferries are the best value (it's a 90 minute crossing to Calais). The advantage of the Eurotunnel is that it only takes 35 minutes but it's around double the price. To give you a reference, I paid: Rosslare - Fishguard return (Stena Line 20% discount) = €275 Dover - Calais return (DFDS Ferries) = €95 (£78) Total: €370
That was for the MX-5, driver & passenger. You don't require a vignette for all the roads in Switzerland only the motorways. Get caught on the motorway without one as it's a stiff fine. If you're sticking to secondary roads in Switzerland then you'll be okay without one.

Andy, just as well you mentioned breakdown cover.....I just rang Autoline (insured on a classic car policy) and they don't offer European breakdown. Drat !!!

You should consider sailing from Rosslare to Cherbourg direct with Irish ferries or Stena ,overnight on the boat no fuel costs across england and the ferries would be cheaper this time of year .We do this crossing about twice a year and find it great . lD lines are also runing one in the summer but landing more south . Hope this helps Brian PS its a bloody great looking run witch you could do yourself with no tour guide

I've sailed that route last May and it's fine as you say, although it was with Irish Ferries (nice boat too). I have priced Irish Ferries for 2 people and car (over night cabin compulsory) and it comes in at €387 so definitely no saving there. Then you still have your petrol costs, say to the Swiss border, which is 550 miles from Cherbourg approx. However, by going across the UK you can be in France the same day as leaving Rosslare (you will be a day behind by sailing to Cherbourg). It's swings and roundabouts though really which ever way a person chooses. Calais is nicely situated if you were going ot the race tracks as Spa and Nurburgring are not too far away. I just prefer the UK route for it's timing really and location (if going to Germany, Swtizerland etc.). LD Lines sail into St Nazaire on the west coast which is kind of out of the way if you're going to Switzerland or Germany. Just my 2 cents ! I agree with you 100% - the route Andy suggested could be done without a guide and it would be fantastic ! If heading down that way, consider the Route des Grandes Alpes: the roads and scenery are knock out !

Oh yeah, the downside to going across the UK: it's aaprox 330 miles from Fishguard to Dover so it's a long day especially if you have to drive to Rosslare before sailing !

Just got confirmation that they are running this next year and it is going to be an annual event. Ill be looking into this more. If we get a big enough group we may even get a discount on the ferry. When they confirm next years route we can look into accommodation etc.
The next question is what route home? eg. To swing by Nurburgring is 1850 km + what ever track distance. But this makes the overall cost of the trip go up a bit so we'll see closer to the event. Anyone have any suggestions.
And a full service before the trip would be highly recommended.

Well dudes, I'm in Germany right now with the 5. The weather is pretty mixed at the moment which keeps the fun factor at bay if the road If the road is drenched. I came up the Black Forest via the B500 from start to finish. There are other "L" designated roads here that at just as good with less traffic. Today the B500 was busy enough. Still hoping to hit the 'Ring and Spa again later in the week but the weather will dictate that. If it's pouring rain then I'll pass. Before I left I just done the usual oil/filter, plugs and air filter which wasn't €€€ if doing yourself. You will spend a lot on fuel though !!

The organisers have contacted me about next year's event. They haven't decided on a date. They are looking at either June, July or August. What month would suit everyone please put your desired month below.
