I can now add RUST / CORROSION.

On the Brake Lines / Hoses. Watch out for this. For me EXTENSIVE CORROSION on Middle Rear and Nearside Rear. RESULT is Fail / Refusal form say "This vehicle is unsafe and should not be driven"

Bahhhhh ....

Hiya AC,

Its Extensive rust on Middle Rear & Nearside Rear BRAKE LINES themselves.

Yes - the outer panel near the wheel arch is rusted through as you can see. Just tapped with backend of a screw driver, nice chunk fell out. The "inner" part behind seems OK at the moment but merits further investigation.

From my reading it seems quiet alot of the early 00's MX5s are showing serious rust in sills and also chassis. I think mine is in serious trouble TBH. Rust from inside out ..

In fact I have been looking at "upgrading" to an 08 MX, but am getting really scared of these rust stories in MX5s in general - its pretty extensive in general in MX5s, maybe all Mazdas. I reckon this will put quiet alot of MXes into the scrap yard.

Im beginning to consider NOT going for another MX now :(

Sills aren't a big deal to change, just rust proof them afterwards and they should hold up.

Yes Steve. But I cannot do this myself - I do not have the room or tools to do so.

Under the car is suffering from a decent amount of rust all round. I reckon the wishbones will get pulled next time around OR at some point in next year or two NCT.

OK - you might say take them off, sand them, hammerite them etc - again you need the space, tools etc etc. Otherwise getting others to do so will cost serious bucks labour wise.

As I said in another thread I bought this car at a Mazda Main dealer. After recent research it was established that this was a UK MX imported. Either the garage didnt know or didnt tell me - also, my fault, because i bought from Main Dealer I let my guard down and didnt do a UK motor check. SO - keep this in mind those who might be considering purchase. Check if its a UK MX - if so go through the chassis etc with a fine tooth comb OR walk by. The top might look great but she could be rusting from the inside out due to salt on the UK roads.

AND BTW - Rust on the outer body panels as above ( in my case right through the panel ) AND on the sills WILL FAIL THE NCT. On an MX5 it is seen as STRUCTURAL.

Remember the NCT have upped their failure rate from 30% to 50% - added way more items that can fail or are failing alot more things that used to pass.
