Willliam mentioned this at the weekend and I went searching
As always, you can get your car tested up to 90 days prior to the expiry of current test and cert will last for 2 years (if under 10 years old) or 1 year (if over 10 years old) from the expiry of the old cert
However, they have now a voluntary early testing facility where you can get the test completed more than 90 days before the current cert expires BUT the cert will come into force from the date of the test and will last 1 or 2 years depending on age of car.
As I put my car away for the Winter and my cert expires in Feb, I have decided to get the test done at the end of September, before I put the car away. That way, when I put the car back on the road in April, it will have a valid cert and it also means that I can get the test done each year before I put it away and before the Winter has had a chance to seize things up. I know I am "losing" 5 months of a cert but it is a one off and a September test suits me better
This may be of interest to others who put their car away for the winter
There is also an unusual quirk for anyone with an 06 car. These will be due a test next year and will get a cert for 1 year as it will be 10 years old. However, if you get it tested now, you will get a cert Now but it will be for 2 years (from now) as the car is not yet 10 years old!! Be careful, the test has to be done and passed more than 90 days prior to expiry of the old cert; if you let it go within 90 days, then the cert will issue as my first line above. (The car has to be less than 9 years 9 months old when it passes the voluntary test); So anyone with a car registered in the first week of Jan would need to get the test completed, and passed, in Sept to qualify for the 2 year cert.
Hope this makes sense, see NCT website for details
