Underside Protection

Postby Len » Tue, 11 Aug 2020 3:33 +0000

Hi, thought I would ask here before anything is done. A 1998 MK2 1.6 manual . Irish. 1 owner. 36 miles. Just getting the mother and father of reconditioning. Has spent its life in an insulated garage. What would you do to the underside to protect it?. the lads here in the bodshop just want to schutz it. Its a dead genuine straight car and I hate the thought of doing that to it. Its got very light surface rust underneath. Has anyone any recommendations as to what would be a good option. I dont want it to look like I am covering up non existant rust?? Any help welcomed. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather.

Hi Len, some say that the shutz can do as much harm as good, in that it can trap moisture causing more rust.
Owatrol seems to be getting good reviews, I saw video of it being uaed on a Ford prefect/anglia on facebook, he as good as swears by it

Still got the merc alright, it's declared off the road for now, I'm getting more use out of the mx5 at the moment. Did a couple of trips around connemara, trying to count the amount of convertibles I met was a bit of fun

I'm in the middle of doing the underbody on my MK1 project using bilt hamber products, If you give them an email maybe with a few pics they can recommend what you should use i know they do a clear underbody wax which is probably what your looking for

I use dinitrol in mine, comes with a rust converter, cavity wax and underseal, it's about 150 quid for the small car kit and I did have some left over
