lads i have a 98 mk1. every now and again my power steering just goes. it doesent seem to make a difference if it hot or cold. fluid is good and most times its when im sideways :( not good
any ideas thanks

Sounds like your pump is pumping air rather than fluid for those moments.. fluid churned up by the pump will airate (spl?).
I'd suggest changing your fluid.. try and get Redline PS fluid its formulated to avoid the airation (seriously.. is this how its spelt?).

When draining, undo the lowest part of the return line and turn the rack fully from one side to the other to pump out the fluid in the rack.
