I thought this was a "for sale" thread? yo stevo, maybe add a "naggin" or "I'm always right" section to the mail topic section?

This one is getting outa hand time to wind it up. There is merit in what all have added...indeed the stigs original point holds merit on the 'value for money' point. Look I'm no car snob and defo not a mx5/eunos snob....yes there are power and value differences between earlier and later mk1 1.6. models....jap imports have all the extras....uk models have rust issues...there are lots of nuances indeed if you got a nice mk2 for say 5k now you could have years of almost depreciation free motoring as you may well get 3 to 4 way down the line coz 3 to 4 is comfortable hobby money and is about the price of restoring a wreck so is probably the bottom out figure that is until the 89's hit 30 year old mark and may if showroom get more as they qualify for the perks of vintage. nuff said...these cars are bloody amazing and worth every cent no matter what anybody pays for theirs. Everybody back on the same side no banns just helpfull banter. Stig keep up the technical wisdom and get that car back on the black stuff.

fair play to her if she gets her price but from my experience , buying a convertible is like buying a boat, don't do it in high season. i bought my eunos in january in england from a car dealer. lucky at time as exchange was 95p to 1euro. flights from donegal-dublin-manchester cost me 68euro, train from manchester to southport cost £14 and holyhead to dublin port 79euro. car cost £1800 with 6 months warranty which wasn't much good to me but if he was prepared to give it she must have been a good un. 112000kms/75000miles. on my street at home for just under 2100euro .my motto is, don't wait till the sun comes out, buy in the depths of winter. irish cars being advertised when i bought were still for sale 6 months later.

Sounds like good advice. You didn't however mention how much vrt cost to clear (or the cost of doing the nct) it all adds up. was it a flat €750 or was it emission based? Did they charge for extras . Could be helpfull for others.

going by nct staging page will cost about 750euro. car had just passed mot and i have had well checked out on return home so with all seeming to work as it should, even spending a few euros i would hope that vrt and nct would be done for no more than 1000euro, but hopefully for only the 2 fees. still a cheap roadster. hopefully more knowledgeble members would give me some of their views when on camping weekend

First off, fair play for doing it. What year is the car that you bought? And what is the NCT staging page?

VRT on roadsters varies by age and market value I thought. I was looking at importing a 91 and VRT on this was 879euro, I also looked at a 94 and it jumped to 1235euro using the VRT calculator. https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showCarCalculator

So basically the car cost you about 2k in euro, and if VRT and nct costs total another 1k. Take into account your time to get car and nct it etc. and the other fees, you should be able to find a good basic one here for not far off that money?

Don't get me wrong, I'm only playing devil's advocate. If you have genuinely made a big saving (or saving at all) fair play to you, I just know when I looked into it, the only way I could make much of a saving was on a 1990-1992 car.

Hi bought my car in the UK also. I found it easy tho as I've imported other cars from the uk and Ni in the past. I searched high and low here but could'nt find a car to suit my tastes. A lot of the cars here were rubbish, abused and over priced.
I remember going to see a car in Dundrum and the bloke showed up with the dash hanging out of it! When asked about it he said "i removed the stereo so you'll need to fit your own"!?!??! Like WTF? and he wanted 5k or something. Good Luck to him - pure nutz   .
I viewed 5 in total and one owner was so desperate to sell, I thought he was going to give it to me for nothing - the desperation/killing himself to sell it to was embarrasing  :?
Anyways, I souced my car online in the uk autotrader and found a black 1.8 mk1 93 with 44k miles on it in Bristol for 2.2k sterling. Rang the owner and it was his mums who passed away.He inherited the car and it was SORN in his shed for a bit. He was a lovely bloke, picked me up at Bristol airport and went to his house and viewed the car,his partner made me brekkie and we did a nice deal. He was sorry to see his old mums car go and kinda emotionally asked me to take good care of it. :|
It has a fresh MOT and service and new battery as well as the most comprehensive file of records/documents/reciepts/mots/vosa's/the worx. When I got it home, I vrt'd it for €840. It passed the NCT first time, no money spent. All in the car cost me €3200 ish. and that was when the € was 64p to £.
I still think today that the best value is to be had by going to the UK as Sterling is even cheaper now and the range/amount of cars to choose from is much bigger.
Having said that, if you get a car here for money the same as you would in the UK (landed and vrt'd & tested) happy days but as I said before, I still think some cars are over priced here in Ireland and I'm not being specific to anyone here, I'm making a general comment that a lot (not all, granted) can be bought cheaper by importing.

Fair play, sounds like a great deal! Think I saw you around stillorgan a couple of times?
I suppose with anything you'll hear horror stories and happy stories.
