mmmm.... thinking of getting a hardtop, although I've managed very well without one up to now. But the '5 spends most of its time outside, so I reckon a hard lid would be a good option. Anyone got any advice, pros - and any cons? :?

The only disadvantage is removal/fitting and storage, only to be expected with something so large and awkwardly shaped, but if you can get your hands on one at all, DO IT. :thumright:

Hi. Had one with a z3 years ago & thought it was a pain. Put it on in Nov & took it off Feb. Other than security I don't see point. A good soft top won't leave in water....and we get as much wet stuff in summer as winter in this swimming pool of a country so why put it on at all? do people put them on in winter because of the dark :P And you need to have a place to store it when not in use. In fact the best thing about the one I had for the z3 was it made it really easy to sell the car!

Yup, just thinking this eve on the dark rainy commute that I'd throw the roof on the next time the softtop is dry.
I find it stiffens up the car a fair bit, improves security, protects the softtop from winter road filth, gives me a rear heated window, makes it quiter & warmer and stops my rear plastic window from shattering/splitting/cracking on the icy mornings.
They look good with them on .... and theres the just for a change factor too..
A shed/spare room (be it yours or someone elses ) is handy for storing them.

As regards the heated rear window. My Ht and car have all the necessary wires and connectors but I have no idea how i'm supposed to turn on the heated window. Any idea how these operate should I have a switch somewhere? Or do I just think it on

you need to install a switch, and maybe a relay, the wires should be present behind those blanks Fergal on the dash.

Ah bueno. I presume it's a case of chasing the wires from the yokey at the back then.

I bloody hate electrics
