Ollie, we're gonna have to pick a date soon and stick with it ,because like myself, people will have to make arrangements at work or whatever. The cross-UK thrash sounds more inviting than an overnight on the boat, but as you are the co-ordinator on this one, I'll go with whichever option is picked. Besides, as your co-pilot I ain't got much choice How far from the chunnel to the ring?? John

Agreed John, I'll look more closely at it hopefully tomorrow. There's a good thread over on Octane to read up on and I'll chat to Ivan who's been to get the suss.bren wrote:I'm easy, boat or chunnel, will go with whatever is decieded

I second that .. am trying to arrange holidays too so perhaps we can put up a date poll with some options? My tuppence on the chunnel versus overnighter on the boat. Having done the wine thang to France on multiple occassions via the UK/chunnel I would have to say I'd go for the overnighter. Once you are at Dover the tunnel is amazing. 35 min crossing but actually only 20 under land/sea. easy on and off and you can get out of the car to stretch your legs too. There is nothing on the train but a loo as nothing else is needed. It's very quick. You share each cabin with 4-5 other cars. Ubber cool if you haven't been before. However, the drive from either south or north wales is long, you have to deal with UK traffic and you wont be able to avoid going around the M25 which is busier than the M50 even on a good day. I've done this run and the quickest I've done it in is from South Wales 3 hour ferry crossing followed by just under 4 hours to the M25, 2.5 hours to Dover. The only nice part of this drive is for the 1st 45 mins-1hr before you get on the motorway in south wales. Personally I'd prefer a night on a ship with the gang, a couple of bevvies and a good nights sleep, wake up and have breakkie before getting on the road. I've done this trip about 4 times, usually via Holyhead, but I didn't go last year as the cost of ferry+tunnel was greater than going via the France/Ireland ferry and I like to make this a weekend only trip when on the hunt for Wine. Irish Ferries used to do a 48 hour special that was around €100 return. You can't do a weekend on the overnight ferry and have enough time for getting the wine. Also Calais is mucho better for food and wine and I know a nice little bistro just down the coast! Although there is a 2 hour journey difference between Calais/Nurburg and LeHavre/Nurburg. Calais being the shorter trip. I hope that isn't coming across as being too negative I thought I'd share my insight and my preference. (Of course I will go with the majority!) Shena

Personaly i look on it as a road trip and i'd much rather be driving than on a boat. Done across the uk to france my self many times. It is a long run, but is that not the idea thats it's a driving holiday? I was going to say you are getting like the porsche club, in that you don't want to put miles on your car cos you would devalue it. But i wont say that because they might be watching.

True Ivan.
This will be my first road trip so I guess my mind set will have to change. I await my conversion!
I suppose my primary concern is cost .. I'm happy with the long drive .. but the M25! Yuck....
Just saw your edit!
I have no worries clocking up miles .. about to go 100k

well the idea would be to get to the ring mid week (less busy) so we would be trying to hit the m25 early on a sunday morning. I know its still busy but not as busy.

Very true if are you taking the twisties on the way down to Dover(?) Might be worth it with an overnight in Oxford or something.. don't forget, that main road from Holyhead down is sooooooooooo boring!! Plus you'd arrive at the same time as the slow boat..
