High Pitch Squealing.

Have a 1998 Classic 1.8 model, and not long having taking possession I had the timing belt done.
Run wonderfully for the past few months. Recently it's been squealing like a banshee! The belts are fairly taught with no indications of slack. Its driving me crazy. I've seen all sorts of advice on line but nothing that's convincing. I'm looking closer to home for assistance.
Anybody got any solid advice. Really appreciate assistance.

Sounds like a bearing going.... alternator, water pump???????

Yeah could be a bearing or idler puller on cam belt, try taking belts off one at a time and run the engine briefly, see does the noise go away. If its still there with just the cam belt on then it's waterpump or idler puller.

Sounds to me like whoever done the timing belt job set the tension of thr belt too tight and its after ruining a bearing in one of the pulleys.

Do what previous posters have said, my money is on the waterpump.

Firstly, thanks for all the replies.

Having done further research online, studied various writings on my problem, a proper inspection of the problem was called for.
No, car mechanics isn't something I have much experience in, but I'm a biker, so essentially I'm well used to getting my hands dirty.
I discovered that there was a nut missing from the top bolt of the alternator. There was some slight movement of the alternator which in turn lead to the belt slipping. Having clearing the way to give me clear access to the alternator, I was able to adjust and secure the alternator at the best angle to put just the right pressure on the belt. This after I had checked all other areas of possible causes, but I was sure in the first instance that the alternator issue was my main cause of the trouble.

Having done & completed the job, the car is now running as smooth as ever. I've checked the belt this morning and see no unwarranted damage no additional issues. All is good. I'll keep a watchful eye over it in the coming weeks & months ahead.

Aways, may end up having to put it up for sale in the near future, things are getting tight!
