Barcelona Road Trip May 2013

Have been toying with this for some time. Its coming up to the anniversary of last years Barcelona trip. It was such an excellent trip, everyone enjoyed it, so its time to consider another one. There was a suggestion that a trip to the Belgium GP would be an alternative, however weather can be patchy around the end of August and for people with kids, it clashes with back to School weekend etc.

Barcelona is circa 2,000 miles round trip which is a lot of driving, but what the heck, its a road trip. Am suggesting going out 2 days earlier than last year to give a bit more time for traveling

Here's what I am thinking

Dates will have to be confirmed when the GP calendar for 2013 is available but generally mid May.

Rosslare to Cherbourg on Tuesday arriving Wed Morning
Get to Barcelona Friday evening
Qualifying on Sat
GP on Sunday
Back through Spain and France
Sail from Roscoff Thurs arriving Rosslare Friday morning

Cost is probably the biggest issue, I have pulled some costings together, probably pretty accurate

Out Tuesday Ferry back Thursday week = 10 nights, 2 nights on Ferry so 8 nights accommodation in France/Spain

Costs Single

Ferry 250

Accommodation 360
GP Tickets 200
Meals/Drink 350
5 Star insurance 200
Travel Insurance 50

Total 2185

Two people traveling

Ferry 290
Fuel 575
Tolls 200
Accommodation 720
GP Tickets 400
Meals/Drink 700
5 Star insurance 200
Travel Insurance 100

Total 3185

Cost per person 1593

Obviously some costs are shared when travelling in pairs

800 miles from Roscoff to Barcelona so circa 2,000 miles round trip allowing for detours. No allowance for travelling within Ireland to/from Rosslare. Estimating 330 litres petrol @ 1.75 per litre = €575
Accommodation based on 8 nights @ €45 per night. We can probably make some savings on this figure, it was cheaper than this last year

That's enough for now, just sowing the seed, plenty of time to organize.

Seriously though, Yes, the Belgian GP would be the alternative....and the Nurburgring is no too far away either. Given the current economic climate ,if I decide to go on a road trip I'll probably be camping.

As I say, its only a suggestion at this stage. See my comments about Spa as regards weather and time of year but yes it is still an option

On a sorta related topic...anyone who was on the Barcelona trip interested in a reunion get together, bbq or something?? Mike's wedding is sometime this year too..we crashing the afters??? ( as promised??)

We would love a repeat of last years trip and the extra days would take the pressure off for sure. In total agreement as regards to Spa and the weather problems. It needs to be open topped motoring as it was last year.
Well done Paschal for the budget projection.....The Bank of Ireland are giving low interest rates for this trip? :bom:

There is a chance that Formula 1 will return to France in 2013. F1 trying to do a deal with Belgium for alternate years. If it does go ahead in France in 2013, it will be at the Paul Ricard circuit which is in Le Castellet which is close to Marseille in the south of France. Still a good drive (785 miles) but more manageable than Barcelona and oh what scenery. Not sure if it will happen or at what time of year, but worth keeping an eye on. Prices for GP tickets etc likely to be low as the French hate paying for anything!
