Fin Whale Baltimore Co.Cork August 14 2012.

The Irish 'National Parks and Wildlife Service' decided to "allow the whale to die naturally and hopefully quickly".
The whale died today at 11am after TWO DAYS of slashing itself up on the rocks in the Harbour



I DO NOT agree with the NPWS decision !!

Yeh don't think it was right...... They had a lady on the radio saying she took her children to see the whale thinking it would be interesting for them.... The kids came away quite traumatised as she really didn't know just how bad it was.......

Yeah and now the 'Groups' are all passing the blame and nobody is taking action to stop this from happening again.

Solution? How do you "humanely" despatch an animal of that size??

They use a drug on beached whales in Northern Ireland but that drug is not allowed in Ireland.
It would have been a quicker death if the Army or Navy was contacted for assistance but they left that far to late.

Was down there since monday. It was horrific and the amount of people with kids crying was shocking.Poor whale picked the wrong spot, probably got confused with all the boats and moorings. It picked a place which didn't dry out and so beat itself to death of the underlying rocks and the Pier.

Myself and my girlfriend were there on Tuesday, it was 'horrific'.

Aha, when its all over. Talked to a guy from that crowd yesterday and he said it was nature. If it was a horse in a race it would have been shot immediately.

Exactly - when it's all over. I told them days ago to contact the Irish Army and Irish Navy for assistance and they didn't until it was to late

It's taken me two days online with little sleep to stop this from happening again in Ireland but it got done in the end. It's just so sad that this whale had to die in this way and for such a long long time.

They shoot whales in other countries if there is no way to use drugs on it and it is NOT against International Law to do this if the whale is beached/suffering/dying in 'Whale Protected' areas which Ireland is.

The guy in the crowd must be an animal himself or just a simple simpleton. When I was there people were laughing/clapping/cheering - was he one of those animals ?

Me and my girlfriend were totally horrified and she was crying her eyes out. I kept telling her "Don't Look!" and I wasn't even looking myself, I just held my video camera over the Harbour wall and couldn't even see it's screen clearly (thank Gawd!!). After a short time it was obvious to me that the whale wasn't going to stop/die and we just left the area in shock. The 'animals' stayed there for the blood.

But this will never ever happen again in Ireland !!

Lets hope so lad. It will probably go viral now and i hope it does. But of all the places for it to happen.......Baltimore, full of very wealthy and influential people who WILL be listened to.

I doubt that, some 'upper under inbred' parked his black Merc directly on the main road beside the Harbour wall illegally, jumped out to 'go see the whale' and the Garda that was there joined in the jokes about how he wouldn't get a ticket but the Garda should throw his parking ticket book at the whale.
