John
I recently (March) taxed one of my bikes in the Cork office and was shocked when I was asked for my insurance details. I know they usually don't ask but they did on that ocassion.

Does this mean that under that policy you could have 2 cars effectively insured on the one policy as long as one is owned by the husband and one by the wife???? If thats the case its a very cheap way of running 2 cars in the household???????

Yep, so it would seem, but I was reluctant to publicise it just in case they decided to withdraw the facility.......so everyone else just BACK OFF and let me get away with this John Mind you, I expect that you're only gonna get 3rd party on the 2nd vehicle.

I ave done this on and off for the last few years. Your county council will take your money, don't worry about that anyway.
You can carry your cert, that's what I did myself and 99% of the time the guard will usher you on. You just need to be aware that you could still get a fine. At the moment it is just a fine, not a penalty point offence.

Be careful lads, what if the wife runs into the husband or vice versa and someone is seriously injured............Insurance Company would run a mile.

I'd have to make sure that she's nowhere in the vicinity when I'm in the 5, either that or bring her to ride shotgun!! J

Only third party on the 2nd vehicle. It is called third party extension. You won't be the first, it's fairly common to be honest. there is always the chance that if you have a claim the insurance company can actually prove it is your car. As the literal translation of the cert says you must not own the car. The car could be in your wifes name and you could still own it, which is perfectly legal if you are common law or indeed married but would make your insurance void essentially. No guard has a problem with this but as said your insurance company could fight over literal translations of what the cert means and they hae more money than most of us if it comes to it. So it's by no means is a great way to run 2 cars in a house. Don't forget the car is not insured against any damage, fire or theft. If its a mk1 would be far better trying to come up with the funds for a classic policy maybe €250. they will even take it in two installments a month apart. Better be safe than sorry in my opinion. But I drove an s14 for around 18 months on my third party extension nd car was in the missus name. Stopped 10 times or so, no fine etc etc but no dealings with insurance either. just trying to give you all the info I have myself

I applied for an insurance policy for the MX5 through the same online broker I used for my main car. After having no news for a few days I rung them today and they told me over the phone that I was insured and could drive straight away. As I was concerned about having no disc to display on the mx5, I asked them for a temporary proof of insurance by email. Here is the email that I just received instead: Further to our recent telephone conversion I have noted that your vehicle is over 15 years old and as such we are unable to offer coverage. Our website should have provided you with a policy premium as our underwriter will not offer insurance on a vehicle aged over 15 years. No money has been taken from you card. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
I've tried several online companies and they seem to have all the same silly age restriction policy. So you have to be insured, as it's required by the law, but then insurance companies are entitled to chose their customers, at their own discretion. Why not saying: "Oh, sorry, you have a black car, we don't like them very much 'round here" I could put the car on the GF's name and drive it with my own policy for my main car, as suggested above, but I'd like to get your opinion first.. Tonight I'll try ringing Axa to see if I can get a classic car policy.. If you have any suggestion for a company that would insure me, please do! Nico

I'm pretty sure they do have to quote you... but with those with the age restriction you mightn't like it John, are you sure that the other car doesn't also have to be insured not just owned by a third party?

It's a US broker for expatriates, and they use a UK/Irish insurance as their local branch.
I rung a local broker this morning and was told they only offer classic policies for cars up to 1990, and was referred to "First Ireland" as they would be the only ones to not have an age restriction. So I spoke to first Ireland, to hear that the Mazda/Eunos is not a classic car and they cant give me a quote.
So basically car is too old but not old enough.
I'm considering selling it to the GF as my actual insurance company covers me on cars that I don't own, as you suggested previously. I've read the T&Cs and there is no mention that the car has to be insured in the first place. Too bad I was just willing to offer them free money, nobody seems to want to take it, and I'm fed up looking at it on the driveway.

Do you have use of another car? Are you over 30? Do you have no claims history? Is the car over 20 years old? Will you join Wexford sports and classic car club? 20euro registration fee! Not sure if last one is a must but it certainly helps as they are affiliated to a registered car club.
If you answer yes to all above I am pretty certain Fbd will insure you. If no which one is an issue for you? Ash

Yes to all the above Ash,
However I've been driving for 1.5 year only in Ireland, and my no claim bonus before was gained abroad and over 2 years ago when I started driving in Ireland, so i had to start from scratch!
That's very helpful info you give me though!
Anyway for now I sold the car to the GF.
if I can sort something else then I'll buy it back, or possibly when the insurance on my main vehicle expires. At least I'll have 2 years no claim..
Thanks for the input!
Nico
