Bipes ACU

Postby fez » Thu, 16 May 2013 4:11 +0000

Anyone any experience with these? Looking in the future to try and get more power out of the mx5 without forced induction. What can a megasquirt do that these can't? Can I get rid of the AFM with it? I've a 92 1.6 S Special.

bipes is a unit to retard your timing under boost , 6 wires iirc

they are pretty basic and very crude and a megasquirt will run rings around it all day long.

but for the money and on a naturally aspirated engine is it worth getting? or is it worth getting a megasquirt even? I saw these dyno results on an na enginehttp://www.invisiblesun.org/Miata ... _MaxHP.jpg

I could get one reasonably cheap brought back from the us by a mate if they were any use.

a bipes retards timing when it sees boost , so as you are NA then you will never see boost and therefore do not need any retard

if i were you i would save your money , aftermarket ecus are no good unless you are boosted or have lots of engine work done...but if you have the cash to splash , buy something good , not a bottom of the range megasquirt - try an AEM ems or a hydra.
Aftermarket ecu's / piggybacks need tuned properly or else you will be on the hunt for a new engine and yes m, they might look cheap now , but add in dyno ttime and buying additional sensors and it gets very expensive very quickly

Why waste your time and money on an ecu thats going to cost more than the car? AEM and Hydra are for racing cars that put out huge power and a apparently extremely hard to work with..

I also wouldnt consider megasquirt ''bottom of the range'' and they aren't as hard to tune as people think. I tuned my own engine after a few weeks of research and you can ask some of the lads that have seen it, its perfectly 'adequate'

But ya, a bipes is useless for NA and i wouldn't be inclined to use it on a boosted engine either.

I have a Bipes fitted to our yoke. (mk2 RS engine in a mk 1) . Its easy to fit but does not give you more power. What it will allow you to do is advance the low end timing to give better low to mid-range pick up and then pull the timing back to static (10,12,14, whatever you want) when it senses more airflow/load at high rpm. The 14 degree timing mod does the same(gives better low to midrange pick-up) but sacrifices top end power very noticably. So, the bipes does work to some extent if you drive the complete nuts off the Car. Gives you the best of both worlds .
I'll be selling it soon but only to go Turbo with an aftermarket ecu.

its whatever he wants really and what he can afford

if you buy a megasquirt apparently you get a free shocker sticker and a hoodie and some sweatpants to make you even cooler.....or maybe when your car isnt running properly you can run yourself home lol

Good comeback.

Not sure if youre aware but original means fresh or inventive. So your comment makes no sense.

Guys take the BS to PM/email if you want to continue.

Would be interested to hear more about ECU alternatives in this thread.
