1.8 flywheel in a 1.6

Does anyone have this conversion done?

Im looking at an exedy clutch, and i was hoping to couple it with a standard 1.8 flyhweel. Would love to hear any ppl with actual experience with it? Is there much to be taken off them to lighten them?

I was going to get my 1.6 flywheel lighted but chickened out when I heard all the horror stories of flywheels flying apart (not necessary MX5 ones). Barrys Motorsport in Cork would be worth a shout when your buying your clutch they were best price when I got mine.

I've a fidanza lightweight 1.8 flywheel in my 1.6, with a standard 1.8 exedy clutch. Uprated exedy clutches are around the 400euro mark I think!
The 1.8 flywheel is a straight swap but I'm not sure you'l get much benefit from a lightened one with a turbo.

Cheers for that. I have the clutch priced at 420. Good point with the flywheel, thats the road ill take then!

I'd go for a 1.8 standard one with all unnecessary weight machined out from the back. The horror stories I've heard about flywheels cutting the car in half were apparently with aluminium flywheels, as metal retracts and expands more than iron and manages to get the bolts lose, even with Loctite on them. And it will also be cheaper.
Rhys, if the shipping is too dear (for ~9kg?) I also need heavy bits from Robert, we could pay him a visit :)

I've an OEM exedy clutch but you seem to be after an uprated paddle clutch. I think they're hard to live with for everyday driving.

i only drive her every few weeks and the plan will involve track days for sure!

Ive an Exedy stage 2 in mine. On a standard 1.6, its a bit harsh pulling off but youd put up with it for a weekend car, it would annoy me if I was driving it everyday

Do you find the lighter flywheel makes much difference on the standard 1.6? Any issued with it?

I have a stage 3 paddle clutch in mine, I judders a lot when warm, ie traffic. I'd try a standard 1.8 first, they usually hold about 200 bhp

Has anybody tried skimming the flywheel where the cover mechanism sits? That would put more preload on the springs, and improve clamping force? Of course the pedal would be a bit heavier, but as standard it's quite easy with the hydraulic system, so there is room...
