Dammit - seems I may have had a "mature moment" earlier.......if they're fitted they have to work for the MOT (so possibly not the NCT). I fitted spots to a Chrysler Avenger - went to MOT it and one of the "fails" was front spotlights not working. Instead of taking them off (after all, they had cost me all of £12) I wired them up to a toggle switch in the dash, and on the re-test they failed again, because they must come on with the main beam (not as stand alone lights!). Thankfully Mr. MOT told me to run a wire from the switch to the fuse for the main beam and come back........then it passed.
Wasn't so lucky the following year when I only noticed the sills were virtually non-existent on the morning of the MOT - and proceeded to roll up some newspaper, stuff it in what was left of the sills then smother it in lashings of isopon and sprayed the whole underside grey (it was the only paint I could find). I knew it wasn't going too well when, over the tannoy, the inspector summoned his workmates to look at what he had found, and proceeded to throw lumps of isopon and newspaper out from the pit. This, and the leaky rear brake cylinders consigned the car to the great scrapyear in the sky.
