I'd imagine if you were involved in an accident and they discovered something like brake failure due to dodgy brake lines or something AND that you never had it NCT'd then I'd say they wouldn't pay out...........

From the insurance angle, this would be my worry without an NCT. On the other hand, i am extremely paranoid. ....who said that? where are you?

As for getting the car to the NCT office, then maybe you are "supposed" to get short term insurance to cover the trip etc. Again this does sound very paranoid and not very realistic but.......

As for the tax disc, what Ivan said above is pretty much how i did it so as i said, this could be something that happens in a future law change to force everyone to have NCT. Anyway, none of this is concrete and just rumour and speculation.

So anyone had any issues with claiming on say fully comp insurance but no NCT. If not, who wants to give it a go

Oh BTW john,
I booked my NCT yesterday online for Ballymun for June 17th. There was some other dates earlier but no good for me.

I am trying to get a date for the gf's car and can't get one in any of the 2 nearest centres and even travelling to cork wont get me one (that suits) in the next 5 weeks or so.

Is it just me or does ther seem to be a splurge of cars needing NCT in May/June, mine is up aswell. Booked last week, and going in next thursday..... I though that was long......

Guys have you thought about putting your names down for any cancellations....you just might get in that way, just a thought..

Yip, I put my name down for dub/wic/wex or even waterford so will see how it goes. think I will put the car in blind and see how it goes......don't think these 'pre-nct' tests are worth a pinch of salt so,,,,,,,,,,,,

I suppose if I had 11 1/2 weeks off work I'd probably be in a position to apply to several nct centres as well

I'm guessing there is the same/similar system to Northern Ireland - there you are allowed to drive the car on the road without MOT only on the day of testing, and only to take the vehicle to/from testing centre. You can have the car insured all year, without MOT (in case of fire/theft damage etc.) but not to drive it. In theory, if you need repairs to the car you are meant to have it transported on a trailer...as it is effectively unroadworthy.

That said, my impression is that the powers that be (and also by the majority of Joe Public) have a very lax attitude about such things here.................(should I grab my coat and run now...?)


It is rather similar to the driving license fiasco ....

Someone read the Lisbon Treaty and figure out if there is an answer therein

BTW, I read recently in the local rag where a judge issued fines of €250 for failure to display a current NCT certificate.
I'm also told that the NCT will refuse to release a vehicle found to be dangerously unroadworthy during the test..you will have to get it removed on a trailer at your own expense...fair enough.
