Importing from the U.K. any pointers?

I'm thinking of purchasing and importing a Euros from the U.K.

Has anyone else done it?

Was it pretty straight forward or does the process descend into a bureaucratic VRT nightmare?

The question I would ask is why you are importing one at all when there seems to be plenty fair priced RUST FREE cars available here and no vrt to pay , as far as I understand vrt is a min €750 .
Ove done this exact thing and I would not recommend it from a cost point of view , everything under the car needed to be replaced ,thanks Robert!
Sold mine into England as rust free one are hard to come by there and that was a mk1 ,don't even talk about an mk2 !
Rusty front chassis legs etc
Bought my current mk2 in Dublin from Robert and am very happy with it , very honest rust free car

As regards importing, It's mainly the choice, just looking at one dealer in the north of the U.K. he has, amongst other models, one of each of the following; a VR-Ltd, a S-Special, a RS-Ltd, a S-Special Type II, a R-Ltd and they're all Jap imports and he claims relatively rust free.

But on the other hand the VRT does look like an expensive load of bureaucracy.

I wonder if their" relatively rust free" and ours are the same !
Really depends on how long the car is in England and if it's was PROPERLY rust proofed and undersealed when it arrived in from Japan or if they are fresh imports .
Do yourself a huge favour and look at a number of cars in Ireland from members on here, I'm sure most people won't mind you looking at their cars , where are you based ? There will be a few people on here local to you that I'm confident will help out . I'm I'm co clare if that is of any help

Sounds naff saying "relatively", but that bit was me - I'm an awful cynic, (not really fair to the dealer).

Dublin, Donnybrook, (though the wife wants us to move to Dun Laoghairie).

I was seriously thinking of buying an MX-5 a year or so ago, but was side tracked by a Triumph GT6 - looked fabulous, but an inherently awful design (apologies to any GT6 aficionados)

The exchange rates are also extortionate. Will cost you a hell of a lot more than home stock. What would you do if it turns out there are problems a month down the line. I have never been an advocate for importing cars from the UK.

Yes, it's almost 1.40 to the pound now.

Not importing is turning into a bit of a no brainer.

Might be worth talking to Robert Maguire in Swords , he breaks mx5's but also sells some from time to time .
The cars he sells in my opinion are always honest good value examples
