Strut swap

Postby Pops » Mon, 23 Jan 2017 8:16 +0000

Changed the adjustable coilovers for a 2nd hand set of mk2 struts . I found the coilovers to be too hard for me so mx5spares supplied a set of mk2 struts to put on my mk1. It had been suggested that I should cut one loop off the springs but I took a chance and just fitted them without cutting the springs . Pretty happy with the result, much softer on the road now which suits my old bones. The maxspeedingrods are probably more suited to track use or for someone who wants it sitting low, too many ways to adjust them.
Strangely though, now the car is 10mm higher on the left front and rear. Anyway, I'll leave it alone for a while to see how it settles. This is how it looks now, standard mk2 struts in a mk1

Re height difference side to side, if you loosened wishbone bolts, did you retighten them when the cars weight was back on them?

Ya I jacked up the bottom arms when I tightened up, I'll loosen them again to see if it helps before I get the tracking done.
Tracking has been done before but never correct, I've now set all the adjustment bolts to middle and set track by strings, checked the camber using a metal square and the compass/level app on iPhone, now -1 on rear and 0 on front
Strange how it's 10mm higher both front and rear on the left

Nice. I like the new stance of your car. How's their performance on rough roads?

On our crap roads it's made a huge difference. Still need to set the alignment properly, as is, it's set by strings for the tracking and the compass/level app on iPhone for the camber
