Packing a Mk4

Having practice runs packing the boot of my Mk4 for a European trip at the end of the month. Already knew that the bog standard suitcase that I had used for years in the Mk2.5 and Mk3 wouldn't fit because of the size of the boot opening. Didn't realise you can't even get a Sports Direct umbrella in there neither !!!!!! Hope I don't get the Irish weather over there there.

heheh is the boot smaller or just different shape?

Deeper, but smaller opening for loading. Probably smaller overall.

Man I really like the m4 , I assume it's a 1.5 ? .........pics !!!!!!
I've a boot- bag for mounting on the top of the boot using straps so no danger of scraping the paint ,you are more than welcome borrowing it for the trip , it will hold 50 l of stuff . I can even post !
Where are you planning on going .... That car would suit the Alps perfect
Our last few trips in the mk2 the storage was boot bag , boot , behind the boot , left and right of the fuel tank , behind the seats and even the passenger foot well , wife " needs " a lot of stuff

I just came back from a two week trip to the Pyrenées (motorbike, not MX-5 !) and the weather was scorching for the fortnight.
Hopefully you'll get the same wherever you go. Don't forget to post pics of your trip and car !
I met a French Mk4 owner in northern France recently and he loved his car !
Don't worry about the lack of an umbrella.....I wasn't able to carry one either

Thanks Brian. It's a 2litre sport nav. Heading to England first for grandson no4 twenty first, then through the tunnel, Belgium Luxemburg Germany. Couple of nights in Germany then down into Austria for a night before heading into Italy over the Stelvios pass for the day then down to Lake Garda where I meet up with the Tyrone outlaws for a week. After they fly back I'm heading down to the French med, Monaca then Carcassonne before heading over to Lourdes then back home. About 6 weeks in all, the joys of retirement. Thanks for the offer of the boot bag, seen them in operation and they are good. I'm travelling solo so I am ok for space, just have to manage it differently.

VERY nice to drive, takes no time to adjust to the bonnet/wing shape. Good six speed gear box. Getting 43 mpg on average since I bought it but not doing very much mileage.
Living with the interior, well we'll see what the journey brings Touch screen, very modern the way everybody seems to be going...but at times I just want to reach forward and press a number button for the saved channel. To load the CD, you have to be a contortionist cos it's behind you. No glove box is a bit of niggle, again you have to be a contortionist but the box in the centre rear is at least twice the size of that on a mk3 as are the ones behind the seats.
The hood is brilliant, when you want to put it back up the release catch pushes the hood up so even a small person like myself can turn around and pull it the rest of the way over.

Sounds mighty. If I was ever to buy a new car then I'd be seriously considering one of these.

That is a really nice looking car Brian and 2 l for that bit more poke !
I've promised myself I'll seriously look at these in a couple of years time .
The trip sounds like great fun , keep us all posted as to,how it's going and we need pictures !!

Hi Brian.
That sounds like a great trip, hope you have a wonderful experience.
It brings back fond memories. 3 weeks, 3000 miles through France, Le Harve to Monaco, along Italian coast to Rome, up to Venice, then Austria via Arlberg Strabentunnel, Black Forest area Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and home on a Honda CX500. Camping all the way (nearly froze in the Austrian Alps, even in full m/c gear and sleeping bag)
The MX has plenty of room for one compared to the bike. Keep us posted. Maire and I hope to go on a roadtrip sometime in the NA.
