NCT Letter

Postby MX5Spares » Fri, 01 Jun 2018 11:34 +0000

Anyone have any issues with "modifications" to mx5/Eunos picked up by NCT tester. My owm mk1 VVT failed on dash modifications.Basically I have mk2 loom/dash/engine/box etc in my own mk1 but they now want Engineers Report for the "modifications".I have NCT passed it for last 5/6 years with no issues but apparently since January 2018 new rules have come in .I also need letter from Mazda Distributors , not dealers, to state that car was manufactured without airbags. Dealer letter is not enough and letter must show my chassis number.Mazda UK are working on letter but my car is Jap import so that could cause issues?
Anyway I will update as I get info but this could apply to all "modified" mx5.s Eunos

That's quite disturbing news Robert, given that nearly all MX-5's (Mk1's especially) has some sort of mod, be it an exhaust system, lowering spring etc. It's amazing the testing in this country regularly has more and more sh*tty regulations. I hope you manage to get it sorted without too much drama. Keep us posted !

FFS - that's a right royal pain in the hole, Robert. That's making you jump through the hoops. Are they trying to argue it's not a MK1? (or not a MK2?)

As above, keep us informed - and good luck.

Uhoh... have not tested mine yet this year.
"to state that car was manufactured without airbags" What year is the mk1? Think it was introduced late 94/early 95 for some Irish/UK 1.8 models.

Robert what a pain. I know there processes for dealing with traade customers has changed as well as testing criteria. You could write a book with the detail that they can look for without explanation. As you say it had previously passed with no issue!!!

It sounds like you got a hardass. If possible, try a full retest at a different centre and see if it happens again. This is news to me, I would've thought something like this would be rife in the mod community.

Hi Robert,

The NCT testers are taking the piss with all these Modification reports. It started slowly a few years ago and has evolved to a wholesale misinterpretation of the original purpose. The STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS S.I. No. 415 of 2017 covering the ROAD TRAFFIC (NATIONAL CAR TEST) REGULATIONS 2017, upon which the NCT Manual (Revised JULY 2014) needs to adhere, mentions Modifications only in reference to "Any obviously unsafe repair or modification" and not just a modification. If it were me, I would write back to them looking for clarification and why the consider the modification 'unsafe' and then to the RSA if you don't get satisfaction.

Just put our 1992 1.6auto 104k km through NCT, no mention of above issues but... car failed on offside parking light bulb... took car home. Checked lights. Working perfectly. Did not touch lights/change bulb. Brought car back to nct centre next day. Tester had a look. Car passed... ( I had touched nothing?) Go figure....?
The 4 tyres have plenty of tread on them but are 12 years old and gone hard, lethal in the wet... (yes, have 4 new tyres on order) but still got pass/advisory?
