Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?I have all that side of the engine bay stripped out at the moment. I'll probably not put it back in. I'll see how it looks anyway.

Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?i fitted a cold air induction kit, I was looking at K&N typhoon ($$$) or a cobalt intake with heat shield($$). But with brexit & shipping etc decided to try the cheap route, Found this max power beauty on ebay($). I wanted to hate it but its not bad at all, slightly disappointed its maybe quieter then my old set up of a K&N panel in the original air box. Throttle response is better (placebo maybe) def no worst and it gets a bit rowdier over 5K RPM. Its probably quieter low down which is probably a good turn too. I was left disappointed it is missing the snorting induction noise I was looking for, I might double down and get a proper k&N cone to fit onto this piping. (I loved the roar of the K&N kit on my old pug GTI) The Kit is quiet well made otherwise and with no instructions supplied was only about 30mins to fit. No pictures but same as linked. The silver is a bit naff so might spray it black. Cleans up engine bay another bit too.

Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?That's going to the extreme altogether, when you have time, have a look at yorkshire car restorations on YouTube, absolutely shocking how bad the rust is on mk2 and 3, see if you can get the playlist

Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?I have, and they do great videos, I have my sill repair done, came out very well, just ready for paint, couple of patchs done ok and making a bit of work out of the battery tray yet, welding work stalled so i started undersealing again hence the power washing, il get pictures up later , failed nctcretest too but that another story
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Ha, its never ending, my civic failed because 2cm of the end of the mirror indicator lens is broken
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Ok first real welding job done and dusted, really happy with result, it was only a bubble that the NCT guy put a finger hole thru. My first attempt was pretty rough to I cut it back further and restarted. Body work is not too difficult just very time consuming and a steep learning curve. There was also many steps of grinding, rust treatment. cutting, re-cutting, skim, prime, underseal, final coat etc. All of this is pretty invisible as not really in anyone's field of view on the lowered car sill bottom !! The aerosol colour match is good, but the texture of the undercoating where reapplied is not the same as factory and the undercoat lines is a bit sharp but who cares.
My battery tray rebuild is still a WIP and bit of a mess compared to this. https://photos.app.goo.gl/puhFT3sjqSGerK5V6 https://photos.app.goo.gl/wFySTsQUetebGsnEA https://photos.app.goo.gl/4pLNRQbHH6LnBY2M8 https://photos.app.goo.gl/BNC1yi8SFeU5c8Qy7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/8NYvrs3F6BA2qANM6 https://photos.app.goo.gl/9Qb4DSEQWtkMTGm5A https://photos.app.goo.gl/3hBbMx5Z9EfDjAgNA https://photos.app.goo.gl/JXmEeesmJDCZgBaL6 Last edited by notch000 on Thu, 17 Nov 2022 1:00 +0000, edited 1 time in total.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Well done, a very good result
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?wow great job!
Which mig did you get again?
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Hi Steve, got this one, its a dinky little machine that easily moved about maybe 7-10kg. Also runs off a standard 13amp house plug.
https://www.sip-group.com/product/sip-a ... lder/05793 The gas & regulator cost about another 200 . I'm not sure yet id recommend it , i think it more focused at flux core and Im finding the wire feed a little inconsistent for finer MiG welding. Maybe just my inexperience too, I have a little bit more patching to do and il revert back again. i had looked at much more expensive equipment but pull back and though if I took to the welding id upgrade later. Its been harder to get back into then i imagined. It not too difficult just really time consuming. (which is in sort supply ATM) no much update otherwise. I had been cleaning up the rear arches & undersealing. I was a bit more thorough on the rear end, stripped fully, epoxy primer, seam sealer, several coats of underseal afterwards. Should see me out for a few years !! I also got delivered 1L motorsport engine mounts and full set of 1L bushes front and rear. Also got some OEM car matts, pedal rubber's and a new electric aerial to fit, plus some other random bitt i was missing. I got still at a 10% discount for black Friday but only noticed afterwards there prices went up mysteriously about 4% the eve before but a discount none the less, I think ill go all out and do the rest of the suspension and drop the rear subframe for a clean up while I'm at it. (drop link, ball joints, track rod ends , ARB bushes, diff mounts, shifter rebuilt etc). I ultimately want this ropy old car virgin tight ! I need to get back to finishing welding up the battery tray again first. https://photos.app.goo.gl/68vLVMufkJtG14rX8 https://photos.app.goo.gl/WGccJ8yo7iWFnwtB7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/dbTytAYZNMj7YZ7h6 A note to oneself i might set up a full life project thread yet on this to document for myself.
Re: What did you do to your MX5 today ?Thanks for the link and info. Yep, a thread would be great.
Nice work, I've just fitted another set of engine mounts in the last couple of weeks, very fiddly on the passenger side but doable if you remove the intake manifold support and slide it out towards the front of the engine.
