its done!

Postby ger » Tue, 22 Jul 2008 8:44 +0000

Well, fitted the turbo kit at the week end. Everything went well, started up first time with no leaks or overheating.

The bi-pipes controller works really well, I have it set to retard from 14 to 6 degrees under boost, i'm running 97-99 (whats the verdict on maxol e5 they are selling it as 99 octane) octane so i guess i could move this up to a final retard of 8 degrees. Anyone got any advice?

Fergus i did'nt do the return to sump yet maybe you could give me a hand with this. The sump attachment that came with the kit looked very cheap and the return pipe was the standard rubber one, i would like to sort a better sump inlet and stainless pipe.

I also removed the washer bottle, the plastic was just to close to the downpipe, i will try to source a steel one from on of the rallying places.

Has anyone had any problems with the brake line being so close to the downpipe, i heat rapped it but i think it would be better re-routed.

still doing the run-in but feels great so far.

Thanks for all the advice.

na, it was easy enough, the instructions from greddy are a joke, go to the greddy site and see for yourself. I had a bit of help, an extra pair of hands makes the job much easier.

the turbo really reduces the exhaust note, i had a raspy d-cat sound before, now i just waft along.

Nice one!

Too quiet? Time for a straight through 2.5" exhaust ;-) Have you removed your cat?

The brake lines should be fine if you have them heat wrapped. Is there a stainless steel heat shield over the turbo?

there was no heat shield with the kit so i have just ordered one from flyin miata $50, not bad.

I would still feel happier in the log run with the AC out and the brake line rerouted away from the down pipe, besides the heat cloth looks crap. i was thinking off silicone hoses that way it wouldn't have that 60's NASA feel.

How much boost is it possible to run on the stock injectors?
Also has anynoe DIY'd a cold air kit or cowl for the greddy kit, i have a headlight vent but that worked better with the racing beat induction kit i had before going turbo?

think 7 or 8 psi would be topping out the stock injectors.. 10psi with 1.8lt injectors :

440cc will be good for 12psi (and upwards with good timing) :

A pipe off the turbo with a slight bend will put your filter back in behind the headlight.. I've a pic of mine somewhere.. I'll dig it out

i would like to see your set up, where did you source the pipe?

any idea what the stock greddy boost pressure is?

I also have to fit a boost gauge this weekend, any advice on tapping it in, where did you pull the power source from?

anyone else running a bipipes, if so whats your set up?

Yep Ger, good point... still, like these guys, I'd like to learn more about the basics so I can participate. In the old days we could have relied upon Michael Menarry to knock up a thorough-yet-readable guide to turbos. These days I guess we should start here:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbo

Having read them both, I now think I understand the basics...
No more Mk1, now driving an '08 Mk3. Still fun!
