I've been called for the NCT!

Postby Stig » Sat, 04 Oct 2008 11:23 +0000

Ok, so i got the letter......and so I called them up and got a date - the 15th of Oct!

right, apart from legal plates, anything else to watch out for.
Like i've checked her over and everything works....everything!, and she flew through the MOT in the uk not long before i brought her over here.

Question is- is the NCT here slacker or more rigid than the UK mot?

Ta,

Ollie.

Change the plates, send it in and let them find any areas that need attention, you will find the areas that are inspected on their website. Good luck!!

Put some black tape over your rear side reflectors. Anything other than orange on the side is a fail.

I reckon you'll be fine ollie. The rear reflectors is one thing that sometimes come up for some not for others.
Not much else that they are know for. Good luck.

align the headlights.. easy enough to do up against a wall, just use your other car for reference and make some chalk marks.

Oh, and if your number plate is too small, put a bigger one on (temporarily, perhaps). Run the engine awhile to ensure it's good & warm beforehand, of course.

Good luck!
No more Mk1, now driving an '08 Mk3. Still fun!

Thanks Steve,

I'm trusting the lights will have not been touched since the Uk MOT, but I will check them.......did this before so I'm ok on that one.

Reesy, do you mean the front numberplate? and does it matter if its sidemounted like it is at present?

Thanks Lad,

and ohhhhhhhh, hood up or down for when they go to test it?

Good Luck with the NCT Ollie. I think you have all the bases covered, your main issue will be the number plates..not having the county name in Irish at the top....and being YELLOW of course too !!!

Good tip to give the car a good run on the way, it tends to drag down the emissions a bit.

As you say if it passed with flying colours on the MOT then all being well you will have no probs here.

I brought my car in top down before with no problems, although dont remember if he checked the hood at all.????????

Good luck.

Hi, yes, some members have smaller-than-standard front plates & if you are one of these you need to have a standard size plate for the NCT. No need to remove the smaller one.

dunno about side mounting tho, sorry. Can't think it's a problem cos some Alfas have them off centre from new.

Good luck with the NCT Ollie - I don't think having the roof down should be a problem........just resist spinning into the carpark at the centre and puffing up a plume of smoke from a few donuts....

Where are you going - Athlone? I've put a few cars through there and they have always seemed "reasonable". If it passed the MOT recently enough I hope you haven't too much to worry about. Compared to the MOT, I prefer the way they let you follow the car through, and talk you through, the whole process.

If your car was MOT'd in N.Ireland it should be fine, it's pretty much the toughest test since they put in all the computerised jigs.

The mechanics barely even look at the car, they just drive it up on to a big machine that lifts the car up & shakes it about all over the place. It's bloody horrible to see it happen to your pride & joy, but it does test the shocks, struts etc.. Good luck with it. :D
