Turbo Vs Super Charger

Postby Stig » Sun, 19 Oct 2008 10:12 +0000

hi,

I'm thinking about going for one or the other.......but i'm kinda torn.
Questions like Cost differential, the abilitiy to fit it DIY, power delivery, best oem kits etc etc, all hang over me.

So for my 1.8 mk1, whats the best path for me?
I'm leaning towards the SC.....i'd frekin love un!

discuss and advise please?

Rgds,

Ollie.

If your looking at 2nd hand kit then cost wise you are looking at £1000 stg for a sc and maybe a little less for the turbo.
Delivery of power, turbo is going to give you a major kick when boost cuts in, sc will give you linear power from the off set as its driven by the crank pully. (The negative of this is that you lose some power by the fact that the sc is being driven by the motor its powering - if you get me)
Basic set ups you will get more bang for your buck with a turbo and you can achieve higher boost easier with a turbo.
Both i believe are fairly easy diy with a bit of knowledge.
Don't forget all the extra bits that you may well need to get aswell. You have 1.8 so diff should be fine for the power. Also clutch should be ok for now but don't be surprised if you need to replace it at some stage.
You may also need some form of tuning control (link like i have or something similar) I believe you can get away with out one but you won't be able to up the boost to much and you will need to be a bit careful.
Then after that you may want (but don't need) intercooler (for bigger boast turbo application) larger feul injectors, better brake pads etc etc.

Go out and buy a copy of Banzi (sp) has some of the guys from nutz in there all with FI setups. Gives you bhp figures of different set ups etc.

Also the old saying goes pick any two of the following.

Cheap, Powerful, Reliable.

I am no expert in any of this and i stand to be corrected.
