High idle ticking over

Postby wellermod1966 » Fri, 03 Sep 2010 8:14 +0000

Hi everyone,

Im just looking for a little advice. I dont have a mechanical background, but Ive had a 1991 Eunos vSpec for 3 years, and love it to bits. Ive hardly had any bother with it in that time. Last week, when sat at traffic lights (on a fairly cold engine..had been running 5/10min), the idle rpm shot up to 3000 / 4000 prm. It would sit there revving away to itself, then drop down to 900 again. The oil meter was also strangely enough shooting down to show no oil, and then back up to usual levels once I pulled away. It was also a bit throaty when I took off again, but once I got going, seemed to run reasonably well, maybe still stuttering a little.

I didnt have any headlights on, or the heater or any other add ons. I know Ill probably have to take it to the garage, but I wouldnt mind having a rough idea of what might be wrong before I go in. Any ideas?

Im supposed to be doing a journey this weekend in it, circa 50 miles each way. It seems to be ok once im up to speed, is there any risk of blowing anything if I drive it like this? (other than pi55ing away petrol :) ) She doesnt seem to be overheating even when the engines been running 10/15mins.

thanks in advance,

Mike

Could be something Simple like the throttle cable sticking. Have a look at throttle body end whilst some one is pressing pedal and see does it catch. Maybe a vacuum line has a split in it or has come off although I would have thought if it was that it would do it all the time. Could also be the throttle body needs a clean out with some carb cleaner. Also you might need to reset you base idle. Again unlikely to just go wrong though. Where abouts are you. Local member might be able to take a look for ya.

Thanks for that - im out ballsbridge way, dublin. Im not really comfortable under the bonnet, but Im going to try to pick up a manual and get started with the basics.
I have to use it for 50 mile journey tonight, so wish me luck :)

I sat with it ticking over for 10 mins last night, and it was idle at about 3000rpm. I hit
the accelorator and it dropped to 900 again, and then back up after 2/3mins. When I pull away, it drops to about
400, feels as though its gonna stall, but doesnt! :? When shes up and running at speed, its business as usual! :)

Have my NCT booked in for September so Ill have to get her sorted for then :)

have a quick look/listen around the intake manifold for any air leaks.
