Diff half shaft seal gone again.

Postby AndyJF » Sat, 06 Jul 2013 7:29 +0000

I changed the passenger side diff oil seal a few months back.
I havent been doing any overly agressive driving but its seams worse than ever. The oil has gone everywhere.
Would there be anything that could cause this. Think i heard something about a vent on these that can get blocked.

The car is a 1.8 MK1 with tonsion lsd.
Anyone able to shead some light on this?

Andy

Are the shafts ok? They can get rusted up which would shred the Seal.

You'll forgive me if I'm talking rubbish here - my wife has only owned her MX5 for 9 months and I'm not that familiar with them - yet  (if it was a Mk1 Escort I'd know more about it) but many cars have bushes or bearings just inside of the seal that the shaft runs on and if these are on the way out they can let the shaft move about more than it should and this movement can cause oil leaks.

All the best, Neil.

The shafts are perfect. The part that goes into the diff look brand new.
If there is a bearing or bush gone is it cost effective to fix or should i be on the lookout for a new diff?

The Seals will take up lots of play, but if bearings are gone its no big deal. They are standard taper roller bearings and easily got. I'm more concerned as to who fit the seals. They are easily damaged during insertion and by the c clip ripping a piece out of them.

I have a supplier in Dublin if your stuck. Not a stock item so had to get them special order due to the extra wiper lip on them.

Its not coming out too quickly. Only getting a small bit of oil into the diff every 3-4 days. Not even taking a full 100ml.
I have it ordered and if it gets worse ill take it off the road till I get it. Just no big long drives thats all. Lol
