Has your MX failed the NCT? And why? ..

Postby aidanodr » Mon, 18 Aug 2014 2:35 +0000

Hi Guys,

I will start. Recently had my 03 MX in for NCT. It failed unfortunately:

Visual / Aural Defects:

- Brake Lines / Hoses (47 ) Extensive Corrosion Middle Rear - FAIL / REFUSAL
- Brake Lines / Hoses (47 ) Extensive Corrosion Nearside Rear - FAIL / REFUSAL

Test Results: FAIL/REFUSAL:

- The Vehicle is UNSAFE and should not be driven

Unfortunately our MX5s are HUGELY prone to rust and serious corrosion under the car. Even chassis corrosion from inside out - Corrosion of the 'Chassis Rails'. You would need your MX up on a ramp with a good inspection from a good mechanic to spot some of this.

From elsewhere - "The chassis rail rust is due to an enforced change to make the car pass collision safety regulations. "

Go GOOGLE Rust and MX5 - scarey stuff. Why hasnt MAZDA sorted this Achilles Heal issue with the MXes??

Go look at the pics here - not for the faint hearted :D - http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php? ... 131379&hl=

EVEN SCARIER - http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/ ... _IKufldV8E
And yes - I have sill rust. Through outer metal down at driver side wheel arch / sill corner area. Tapped with a screw drives and all fell out . Hole now ( not all way through / Outer only ) about size of a UK £1 coin.

Dropping to mechanic tomorrow to get these brake lines sorted for retest ..

So - anyone else fail their NCT for this or any other fault?

Over the years, mine failed on rear brake imbalance (readjusted and they passed), emissions (oil change and a good flogging + it passed), rear side reflectors being the wrong colour (unscrewed them in the carpark and he passed it... ) and headlight alignment (did nothing, brought it back and it passed).

emissions on 90' mk1 - new 02 sensor solved it. Only fail so far. Bad rust seems to be more in the mk2 or impoted uk cars.

Mine has failed twice, once on the rear side reflectors, he wouldn't pass it if I took em out or taped over them so had to get a new set. And second time on my suspensions springs being loose, I had put in coilovers a couple months before so I took them at their word and brought the car home. Checked it out and they were all tight, I'm not changing a thing and bringing it back and I know it will pass 2nd time. Just waiting on a date now.

Interesting guys - I think a thread like this is handy for us all - things to keep an eye out for when the NCT approaches. More so when we own MXes over 10 years old and have to get it NCTed EVERY Year.

Maybe Mods should sticky a post like this :D

About the RUST. probably partly my fault. I bought the MX from a MAZDA Main dealer and did not do a Check, assuming that buying it from a main dealer things would be OK. I learned my lesson - I should have checked. After a bit of research my mechanic established it was a UK import previous to the garage getting it. Of course the garage either didnt know or didnt tell me at the time.

AND BTW - Rust on the outer body panels ( in my case down by the rear drivers wheel, right through the panel ) AND on the sills WILL FAIL THE NCT. On an MX5 it is seen as STRUCTURAL.

Remember the NCT have upped their failure rate from 30% to 50% - added way more items that can fail or are failing alot more things that used to pass.

Sorry to hear 4ag-kp ..

I have the engine light on permanently in the dash. Tested it. It is either the pre or post O2 sensor. It flew though the NCT test for emissions. We reckon its carbon on the sensor ... maybe :D

BTW - I also got an advisory warning - One of the two light bulbs INSIDE THE BOOT was not working. Im still trying to figure out why this was an advisory, or even mentioned on fail form - You cannot drive the car and go around behind it to open the boot at the same time can you?? Nothing to do with a cars safety or road worthiness??

You could have brought it back to thw garrage if its structural rust unless its a trade sale.
The car has to be fit for the purpose its sold for. If bought for road use it must be NCT passable as its a minimum benchmark of roadworthiness.
Look up sale of goods and supply of services act 1980.

Hi AndyJF,

I admit fault on this myself as i mentioned earlier. I bought it in 2010 from a mazda main dealer. As i was buying from a main dealer i stupidly DIDNT do a full Cartell.ie check on it. I dangerously ASSUMED it was irish as the garage did not know or did not mention it was an english import. That was my stupidity and I am now paying for it. Leasson learned - whether dealer or private do the complete cartell.ie type check.

So too late for sale of goods and supply of services act 1980 - that ship has sailed me thinks.

4ag-kp - Make sure the O2 sensor isnt any way seized before pulling it out :D

Break that with bits inside left could mean new cat, exhaust system :(

Thanks Mods for making this a sticky. I think it would be great for all of us going forward to get ideas as to what the NCT is now failing on our MXes - better to be forewarned.

This thread could become pre nct essential reading :D
