Noisy gearbox

Postby Pops » Wed, 12 Aug 2020 9:49 +0000

Having driven the car more in the last few weeks than in the last few years I've noticed that the gearbox is noisy on the overrun, I did replace the oil in both the box and diff with the correct spec oil when I got it four years ago.
To try to quieten it I drained 1/2 litre of oil and refilled it with lucas oil treatment, gave it a drive of 50km, its so much better, very smooth gear changes and the noise is as good as gone, it might be worth doing the same to the diff as well

Adding the treatment Image

Using a plastic water pipe to fill the gearbox

Somehow I had this on the shelf, can't remember ever buying it but half of it has already been used so the rest went in the gearbox Image

Redline MT90 is very good if you are changing the oil. Not cheap but is recommended weight.

Thanks Steve, lubex is what I used a few years ago, I think I'm going to leave it for now and see how the treatment works.
Haven't heard or the red line stuff but I suppose the name suggests it's for high performance use

Iv recently done a gearbox oil change on my project Mx5 an used a 50/50 mix of Redline MT90 and Lightweight Shockproof Oil which was recommended by a lot of mx5 owners in UK etc. an i would definitely recommend doing it box feels a lot smoother an no whining noises

That's worth keeping in mind, so far so good for me, I'm sure I'll be complaining about it again if the lucas stuff doesn't work

It's only in the nose for the pulley right?
